Pomegranate juice killed cultured prostate cancer cells and left the survivors sticking more and migrating less, UC Riverside researchers told a cell biology meeting. They identified the active compounds and planned animal tests of two of them.

Pomegranate compounds may prevent hormone-dependent breast cancer
City of Hope researchers screened 10 ellagitannin-derived compounds from pomegranates and found they inhibit aromatase, the enzyme converting androgen to estrogen; the metabolite urolithin B notably slowed cell growth. Outside experts caution that ellagitannins absorb poorly from the diet.
