A meta-analysis covering 268,276 people and 8,695 strokes found each extra 1,000 mg of potassium a day tracked with 11 percent lower stroke risk, driven by ischemic stroke. Intracerebral hemorrhage risk fell 5 percent, while subarachnoid hemorrhage risk rose 8 percent.

High salt, low potassium means high death risk?
Americans eating a lot of sodium and little potassium were 50 percent more likely to die of any cause and twice as likely to die of a heart attack, in a CDC, Emory and Harvard analysis of NHANES data. Intake figures came from participants' recall of what they had eaten.

Low serum potassium may boost diabetes risk
Following 2,716 African American and 9,493 white adults for nine years, researchers linked serum potassium below 4.0 mEq/L to a 128% higher diabetes risk in African Americans and 53% in whites. Whether potassium supplements would lower risk remains unknown.

Potassium, magnesium reduces stroke risk in hypertensive women
Among 34,670 Swedish women followed 10.4 years, those with hypertension who ate the most potassium had 36 percent fewer strokes overall, and the most magnesium 37 percent fewer cerebral infarctions. Hypertensive women eating the most calcium were twice as likely to suffer intracerebral hemorrhage.

Potassium rich foods
A USDA table ranking foods by potassium per standard serving against the 4,700 mg adult adequate intake: a baked sweet potato tops it at 694 mg, followed by a quarter cup of tomato paste at 664 and half a cup of cooked beet greens at 655.
