North Carolina State researchers report that phytoestrogens tied to soy-based foods altered the sex-specific organization of the hypothalamus in laboratory rats, bringing early puberty and signs of advanced menopause. Co-author Heather Patisaul says the brain changes cannot be reversed.

Energy Drinks Linked to Risk-Taking Behaviors Among College Students
University at Buffalo researcher Kathleen Miller reports two studies linking energy drinks to risk-taking among college students and to a toxic jock identity among college athletes. She notes the drinks carry three to ten times the caffeine of a soft drink, plus taurine and herbal extracts.

Study: Ingestion of trans-fatty acids does not affect insulin sensitivity
French researchers fed rats diets with 4 percent of calories from industrial or dairy trans fat for eight weeks and found neither impaired insulin sensitivity or muscle mitochondrial capacity. Because the work was done in rats, it does not establish that trans fat is harmless to people.

Food allergies: What you need to know
A primer on food allergy with prevalence figures: 1.9 to 3.2 percent for cow's milk and 2.6 percent for egg in young children, 2.3 percent for seafood overall. It counts roughly 30,000 US episodes of food-induced anaphylaxis a year and 100 to 200 deaths.

Chlorinated tap water may cause birth defects
Among data on nearly 40,000 Taiwanese infants, women exposed during pregnancy to trihalomethanes above 20 µg/L in tap water faced a 50 to 100 percent higher risk of three birth defects — holes in the heart, cleft palate and anencephalus. The mechanism is still unknown.
