Among 5,170 NHANES respondents without arthritis, 23 percent of statin users reported musculoskeletal pain versus 18 percent of non-users. After adjustment, statin use tracked with 33 percent more pain overall and 59 percent more in the lower extremities. Arthritis patients showed no such link.

Statins Boost Diabetes Risk in Postmenopausal Women
Women's Health Initiative data on 153,840 postmenopausal women showed those taking statins at baseline were 71 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, or 48 percent after adjusting for age, race and body mass index. Researchers say prescribing guidelines should not change.
Nutrition
You can lower cholesterol, but can't cut cardiovascular risk
A trial halted 18 months early found that adding niacin to statins in 3,412 high-risk patients raised HDL and lowered LDL but did not cut heart attacks, strokes or hospitalizations for acute coronary problems or revascularization.

Acetaminophen linked to lower risk of prostate cancer
Among 78,000 men in the Cancer Prevention Study II cohort, those taking more than 30 acetaminophen pills a month for five years or longer had about 38 percent lower overall prostate cancer risk and 51 percent lower risk of aggressive disease. Shorter use showed no reduction.

The Common Drug that Destroys Your Memory
Dr. Duane Graveline, a family doctor and former astronaut, recounts starting Lipitor in 1999 and suffering an episode of transient global amnesia six weeks later that left him unable to form new memories for about six hours. He then came out of retirement to study statins.

Statins Raise Stroke Risk
Researchers reported in Archives of Neurology that people who have had a bleeding stroke face a higher risk of a second one on statins: 22 percent among those with lobar strokes taking the drugs against 14 percent among those not. Why statins raise the bleeding risk is unclear.

Should McDonald's offer free statins?
Researchers led by Darrel Francis weighed the heart risk added by a daily Quarter Pounder with cheese and a small milkshake against the risk cut by statins in trials of 42,848 patients, and found most statins offset the extra fat. They suggest a free statin served alongside the meal.

FDA: Statin Zocor causes muscle injury
On March 19 the FDA told clinicians and patients that data from a large clinical trial link Zocor to muscle injury, with risk highest at the 80 mg dose and when the statin is combined with certain other drugs. Myopathy is a side effect of all statins, the agency said.
