This beverage cuts risk of gastric cancer in women
Pooling eight cohort and three case-control studies, researchers found women drinking five or more cups of green tea a day 21% less likely to be diagnosed with gastric cancer. No such link appeared in men, and none of the studies were trials.
Vitamins
Vitamin C may help prevent stomach cancer
Reviewing earlier clinical studies, researchers report high H. pylori prevalence tracks with low vitamin C in blood and gastric juice, and that high gastric vitamin C may inactivate the bacteria's urease. They suggest supplementing after standard treatment to prevent reinfection, not a cure.
Cancer
Eating too much red meat may cause stomach cancer
Among 481,000 people in the EPIC study, with 444 gastric cancers identified, doubling heme iron intake came with 13% higher risk after adjustment. The link was statistically significant only in those whose plasma vitamin C fell below 39 mmol/L.
Food
Drinking tea may help prevent stomach cancer
University of Massachusetts researchers found extracts of white, green, oolong and black tea inhibited H. pylori when brewed for five minutes, while only two teas worked at two minutes. The extracts spared beneficial lactic acid bacteria; the active ingredient is unknown.
Food
Eating red meat may boost risk of esophageal cancer, stomach cancer
People in the highest fifth of red meat intake were 79 percent more likely to develop esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, a National Cancer Institute analysis found, and the highest DiMeIQx intake carried 44 percent higher gastric cardia cancer risk. The study is observational.
Diet
Mediterranean Diet Prevents Stomach Cancer
In the EPIC study of 485,044 Europeans, those adhering most closely to the Mediterranean diet had a 33% lower risk of stomach cancer, with each one-point rise on an 18-point adherence scale linked to a 5% reduction.
Cancer
Roy Edward Disney dies from stomach cancer
A Walt Disney spokesman said the 79-year-old executive, nephew of Walt Disney, had battled the disease for a year and died in Newport Beach, California. Stomach cancer is diagnosed in 21,000 Americans a year and kills 10,000.
Diet
Broccoli cuts stomach cancer risk
Fifty Japanese volunteers ate 2.5 ounces of broccoli or alfalfa sprouts daily for two months; the broccoli group's H. pylori colonization fell 40 percent while alfalfa showed no change. Levels rebounded after people stopped, and the bacteria were never fully eradicated.
