Drug Resistant TB a Global Risk; Vitamin D May Help Prevent TB

US tuberculosis cases fell 11.8 percent in 2008, but WHO says drug-resistant TB is rising in Russia, India and China; a third of the 440,000 resistant cases reported that year died. Treating MDR-TB costs about $500 and up to two years, against $20 and six months for conventional TB.

U.S. Tuberculosis cases on the decline

The CDC reported 11,540 US tuberculosis cases in 2009, a rate of 3.8 per 100,000 and an 11.4 percent drop, the largest single-year decline on record. Rates stayed far higher among foreign-born people and minorities, and CDC is checking whether underreporting explains part of the fall.
