A study in Neurology found people with higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins B, C, D and E were less likely to show the brain shrinkage tied to Alzheimer's and scored better on thinking and memory tests, while high trans fat diets tracked with the opposite.

Prenatal lipotropes cut risk of breast cancer in offspring
Female rats whose mothers got methyl nutrients - methionine, choline, folate and vitamin B12 - before and after birth had fewer tumors, smaller tumor volume and longer survival after exposure to a carcinogen. The same nutrients slowed human breast cancer cells in culture.

Pregnant women's diet linked to risk of breast cancer in their daughters
Two mouse trials presented at the Era of Hope conference found daughters of mothers fed omega-3-rich canola oil in pregnancy had gene expression profiles tied to lower breast cancer risk, and daughters of mothers given methionine, choline, folate and B12 grew fewer, slower tumors.

Dietary Supplement Fact Sheet: Vitamin B12
A fact sheet on vitamin B12: what it does for nerve and blood cells and DNA, how stomach acid and intrinsic factor are both needed to absorb it, recommended daily amounts from 0.4 mcg in infancy to 2.4 mcg for adults, and which foods supply it.

Is this Causing Your Chronic Cough?
A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found patients deficient in vitamin B-12 more often had laryngeal hyperresponsiveness, and that supplements improved their symptoms and cough thresholds. The authors say B-12 is worth considering in unexplained chronic cough.

Too much folate may boost breast cancer risk - study
Among 70,656 postmenopausal women followed from 1992, 3,898 developed breast cancer, and those in the highest quintile of dietary folate intake had a 12% higher risk. The authors saw no dose-response trend, and found no link for vitamin B-6, B-12 or total folate.

B vitamins may help prevent cancer
In Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, the highest serum vitamin B2 and B6 levels were tied to 29 and 32 percent lower colorectal cancer risk, with no effect from B12. A separate EPIC analysis linked B6, methionine and folate to lower lung cancer risk.
Vitamins
B vitamins prevent dementia
In an Oxford trial, 168 volunteers with mild cognitive impairment took high-dose B12, folate and B6 for two years; brain shrinkage averaged 0.76 percent a year against 1.08 percent on placebo. Researchers did not test cognition, and a Dutch trial using lower doses found no benefit.

Vegan moms need to take Vitamin B12 supplements, study suggests
A case report in Archives of Pediatrics describes a 10-month-old breastfed baby of a vegan mother with vitamin B12, K and D deficiencies, developmental disorders and a low red blood cell count. Supplements corrected the deficiencies and the infant gained weight and improved.

Prenatal Vitamin B12 deficiency raises risk of birth defect
In 1,200 Irish women studied in Pediatrics, those with vitamin B12 in the lowest quartile were five times more likely to have a baby with a neural tube defect; the authors suggest keeping levels above 300 ng/L before pregnancy. PCRM notes vegans can meet the need with supplements.

Effective oral vitamin B12 soon available
Emisphere Technologies says its Eligen oral formulation raised vitamin B12 absorption to 7-30 percent, against roughly 1 percent for existing oral forms that leave doctors relying on shots. The animal results go to an AAPS conference; human studies are reportedly under way.

Vitamin B12 rich foods
A USDA table ranking foods by vitamin B-12 per common measure, topped by canned clams at 84.06 micrograms per 3 ounces, pan-fried beef liver at 70.66 and simmered turkey giblets at 48.21 per cup.
