Analyzing NHANES data on more than 6,000 children aged 1 to 21, Albert Einstein researchers found 9 percent, about 7.6 million, vitamin D deficient and another 61 percent insufficient. They say this raises the children's risk of bone disease and heart disease risk factors.

Sunlight exposure may lower prostate cancer risk
A review of 1,020 PSA-detected prostate cancer cases and 5,044 matched controls found evidence that greater sun exposure may lower prostate cancer risk, though the findings on skin type, burning and time spent outdoors pointed in mixed directions.

Vitamin D fights pancreatic cancer
Taiwanese researchers report that the vitamin D analog 19-nor-1alpha,25(OH)2D2 inhibited pancreatic tumor growth in vitro and in vivo by up-regulating the p21 and p27 tumor suppressor genes. Analogs aim to deliver the effect with fewer side effects than the most active form of the vitamin.
Supplements
Vitamin D, curcumin may help clear amyloid plaques found in Alzheimer's disease (PR)
UCLA scientists and colleagues report in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease that vitamin D3, alone or with natural or synthetic curcumin, may stimulate the immune system to clear amyloid beta from the brain. The researchers describe the findings as early.

Study confirms that Vitamin D3 may prevent cancer
Spanish researchers reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation that the active form of vitamin D3 switches on CST5, the gene for the tumor suppressor protein cystatin D. They conclude CST5 may mediate the vitamin's anticancer effect and deserves study in colon cancer.

Low vitamin D may raise metabolic syndrome risk
A study in Diabetes Care of 3,262 Chinese adults aged 50 to 70 found insufficient or deficient vitamin D was associated with a 52 percent higher risk of metabolic syndrome. Ninety-four percent of participants had low vitamin D, and 42 percent of those had metabolic syndrome.

Vitamin D: A “Legal” Performance Enhancing Substance?
Citing an American College of Sports Medicine statement, the article reports that activated vitamin D acts as a hormone regulating over 1,000 genes, including in muscle and nerve, and that studies since the 1950s tie musculoskeletal performance to vitamin D levels, peaking with summer sun.

High vitamin D linked to better cognitive function in old people
A Manchester study of 3,000 European men found those with more vitamin D in their blood did better on cognitive and social tests, with results published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. An earlier study of 900 people tied higher levels to better physical performance.

Vitamin D reduces asthma severity
Children hospitalized with asthma problems typically had low blood levels of vitamin D, echoing a 2006 Australian study in which sunlight eased asthma severity in mice. The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology reports maternal supplementation may cut children's asthma risk.
Nutrition
Mother's sun exposure good for offsprings' bones
A UK study of 7,000 ten-year-olds found children whose mothers' final trimester fell in sunny months tended to have larger bones. The authors tie this to maternal vitamin D, and the piece argues pregnant women should keep their levels adequate, mainly through sunlight.

Vitamin D theory of autism
Dr. John Cannell of the Vitamin D Council sets out his theory that vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy or childhood causes autism, arguing it fits the rise in cases alongside sun avoidance and the patterns among twins, boys and black children. He calls it an unproven but disprovable theory.
Other Diseases
Low vitamin D linked to higher risk of premature death from all causes
Among 3,258 patients scheduled for coronary angiography and followed 7.7 years, those in the lowest two 25-hydroxyvitamin D quartiles were 2.08 and 1.53 times more likely to die of any cause than those in the highest, with similar figures for cardiovascular death.
Other Diseases
Low vitamin D harms bones of IBD patients
Researchers in Manitoba measured bone density and vitamin D in 101 people with inflammatory bowel disease. Only 22 had optimal vitamin D levels, and higher levels went with higher bone density, suggesting adequate vitamin D may help ward off bone disease in these patients.
Vitamins
Low vitamin D linked to high risk of premature death
Among 3,258 Austrian patients followed 7.7 years, those with the lowest blood vitamin D levels were about twice as likely to die of any cause, including heart disease, as those with the highest. Nearly 23 percent of participants died, most from cardiovascular causes.
