Among 2,807 Norwegians aged 71 to 75, those in the lowest quartile of vitamin K1 intake were 57 percent more likely to suffer a hip fracture. Vitamin K2 showed no link. K1 comes mainly from green leafy vegetables and some vegetable oils.

Without This, Vitamin D May Actually Encourage Heart Disease
One study estimating intake by food-frequency questionnaire found high dietary menaquinone (K2), but probably not phylloquinone (K1), associated with reduced coronary calcification. Mercola argues most people get enough vitamin K to clot blood but not to protect arteries.

The Fat-Soluble Vitamin that Has Been Shown to Reduce Coronary Calcification
One study using a food-frequency questionnaire found high dietary menaquinone (K2) intake, but probably not phylloquinone (K1), was associated with reduced coronary calcification. Mercola adds that researcher Cees Vermeer considers nearly everyone deficient in vitamin K.

Vitamin K may help men with low sexual hormone
Male Wistar rats fed a vitamin K-free diet for 35 days had lower testicular testosterone, and their serum testosterone dropped further after researchers triggered inflammation with lipopolysaccharide. The authors suggest testicular vitamin K helps hold testosterone steady.

This Could Be Even BIGGER than the Vitamin D Discovery…
Researcher Cees Vermeer argues most people get enough vitamin K to clot blood but not enough for its other benefits, and that blood tests mainly reflect yesterday's diet. K1, from green vegetables, supports clotting and helps keep blood vessels from calcifying.

Children with celiac disease should take vitamins
University of Alberta researchers studied 43 children and teens with celiac disease and found low bone density, insufficient vitamin D and under half the recommended vitamin K intake. Diana Mager recommends both vitamins plus daily outdoor activity to protect their bones.

Foods Rich in This Vitamin Reduce Your Diabetes Risk by 20%
Among 38,000 adults followed a decade, those eating the most vitamin K were about 20 percent less likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, with a stronger link for K2 from meat, cheese and eggs. Mercola suggests the vitamin lowers inflammation and improves insulin use.

The Dark Side of the Routine Newborn Vitamin K Shot
Mercola questions the routine newborn vitamin K injection, standard in the US since 1944, calling it an assault on a newborn's overloaded senses. Citing vitamin K researcher Cees Vermeer, he argues the vitamin is necessary but the shot is not, and that safer routes exist.

Vitamin K: Help for Those with CAC
A Tufts study of 388 people with coronary artery calcification found those given vitamin K1 averaged 6 percent less calcification than those who did not take it. Vitamin K activates matrix GLA protein, which regulates calcium build-up in blood vessels.
