Among 3,223 white HMO members studied at Henry Ford Hospital, higher vitamin D levels appeared to accompany higher risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer. The authors caution that UV exposure, which both creates vitamin D and causes skin cancer, complicates the relationship.

Depression linked to stroke, vitamin D may help both
Among 80,574 women in the Nurses' Health Study, those with a history of depression had 29% higher stroke risk over six years, and antidepressant users 39% higher; researchers suspect the drugs mark severity rather than cause strokes. The piece then floats vitamin D as a shared factor.

Low vitamin D linked to earlier first menstruation, a risk factor for health problems throughout life (PR)
University of Michigan researchers measured vitamin D in 242 girls aged 5 to 12 in Bogota, Colombia and followed them 30 months. Girls low in vitamin D were twice as likely to start menstruating during the study, which epidemiologist Eduardo Villamor ties to later health risks.

Pregnant women in Vancouver may not be getting enough vitamin D (PR)
Among 336 women 20 to 35 weeks pregnant in Vancouver, 65% had vitamin D levels below Canadian Paediatric Society recommendations and 24% below Health Canada's, even though nearly 80% reported taking supplements containing vitamin D. Lead researcher Timothy Green notes recommendations still differ.

The Stunning Effect of This Single Vitamin on CANCER...
Mercola summarises Daniel Haley's book The Politics of Healing, which claims the FDA suppressed ten non-toxic cancer treatments, including Stanislaw Burzynski's, and accuses the agency of serving drug makers. He links this to whistleblower David Graham's 2004 testimony.

Mushrooms contain vitamin d2, but not all mushrooms are the same
A Virginia Tech analysis found vitamin D2 varies widely by mushroom: 0.1-0.3 micrograms per 100 g in white button, crimini, portabella and enoki; 0.4-0.7 in shiitake and oyster; 5.2-28.1 in morel, chanterelle and maitake; and 3.4-20.9 in UV-treated portabella.

Vitamin D reduces risk of falls
Pooling 26 moderate-quality trials with 45,782 mostly elderly, mostly female participants, Mayo Clinic researchers found vitamin D use associated with a 14 percent lower risk of falls, strongest among those deficient at baseline or also taking calcium. The authors note data quality was not high.

Low serum vitamin D linked to higher death risk in breast cancer patients
Among 1,295 postmenopausal breast cancer patients followed 5.8 years, each 10 nmol/L drop in pre-chemotherapy serum vitamin D corresponded to 8% higher death risk and 14% higher distant recurrence risk. Samples taken after chemotherapy began showed no such link.
Vitamins
Vitamin D relieves pain induced by aromatase inhibitors in breast cancer patients
In a phase II trial of 60 breast cancer patients taking anastrozole, Washington University researchers gave high-dose vitamin D2 or placebo along with daily calcium, and found supplementation was associated with less joint and muscle pain.

Vitamin E helps type 1 diabetes
Twenty children with type 1 diabetes took 600 mg of vitamin E daily for three months; the oxidation marker malondialdehyde fell and glutathione rose. Metabolic measures did not improve. The authors conclude the vitamin eases oxidative stress in these patients.
Vitamins
Without This, Vitamin D May Actually Encourage Heart Disease
One study estimating intake by food-frequency questionnaire found high dietary menaquinone (K2), but probably not phylloquinone (K1), associated with reduced coronary calcification. Mercola argues most people get enough vitamin K to clot blood but not to protect arteries.

Vitamin D Council Newsletter - Vitamin D and autism, cancer, and other health conditions
A Vitamin D Council newsletter in which Dr. Cannell answers readers' questions, including one from a mother whose son's autistic symptoms improved on vitamin D and whose pediatrician wants supplements stopped over a 25(OH)D level of 122.

Circumcision, vitamin D help prevent HIV infection
An International AIDS Society report on 110,000 adults in South Africa suggests circumcision may cut sexually transmitted HIV risk in men by 60%. The piece stresses this is an association rather than a trial and that condoms remain necessary, then raises vitamin D as a possible factor.

OHSU scientists discover new role for vitamin C in the eye -- and the brain (PR)
Oregon Health & Science University scientists report in the Journal of Neuroscience that GABA-type receptors in retinal nerve cells stopped working properly once vitamin C was removed. Because the retina belongs to the central nervous system, they suspect the brain needs it too.

The Fat-Soluble Vitamin that Has Been Shown to Reduce Coronary Calcification
One study using a food-frequency questionnaire found high dietary menaquinone (K2) intake, but probably not phylloquinone (K1), was associated with reduced coronary calcification. Mercola adds that researcher Cees Vermeer considers nearly everyone deficient in vitamin K.

Folate supplements cut colorectal cancer risk?
Among 99,523 adults in Cancer Prevention Study II, those with the highest total folate intake were 19 percent less likely to develop colorectal cancer, a significant result. Natural folate and folic acid taken separately showed 14 and 16 percent reductions that were not significant.

Vitamin E prevents stroke-induced injury
Ohio State researchers report that alpha-tocotrienol, a form of vitamin E, clears oxidized glutathione that would otherwise kill neurons, and that oral supplementation helped prevent strokes and stroke-induced injury in rodents by raising MRP1 expression.

Vitamin D helps diabetes -trial study shows
The Vitamin D Council reports on a Tufts randomized trial in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily for 12 weeks improved pancreatic beta cell function in 22 mildly overweight prediabetic adults versus 22 on placebo. Blood levels rose only 24 to 30 ng/ml.
