The Vitamin D Council is launching a subscriber-only newsletter of commentary and analysis on recently published vitamin D studies, at $5 a month, posted publicly four months later. Members also get videos of Dr. Cannell answering questions.

Study: Retinol tied to risk of prostate cancer
A National Cancer Institute study in the American Journal of Epidemiology linked the highest quintile of serum retinol to a 19 percent higher risk of prostate cancer, rising to 31 percent when two blood draws were combined. Whether retinol itself drives the disease is unknown.

Is this Causing Your Chronic Cough?
A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found patients deficient in vitamin B-12 more often had laryngeal hyperresponsiveness, and that supplements improved their symptoms and cough thresholds. The authors say B-12 is worth considering in unexplained chronic cough.

Study: Vitamin D fights colorectal cancer
A meta-analysis in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention found each additional 100 IU of dietary vitamin D a day was associated with 5% lower colorectal cancer risk across ten studies, with serum vitamin D showing a similar inverse association in six more.

Study explain why vitamin D protects against prostate cancer
Stanford researchers report that calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, inhibits prostate cancer cell growth by acting on prostaglandin metabolism, suppressing the COX-2 gene and the EP2 and FP receptors. They propose pairing it with NSAIDs as a possible therapeutic strategy.

Antioxidants in pecans may reduce heart risk
A Loma Linda trial fed 16 adults meals with and without 3 ounces of pecans. Pecan meals doubled serum gamma-tocopherol at 8 hours and cut oxidized LDL cholesterol by 26 to 33%, which the researchers tie to less inflammation in the arteries.
Vitamins
Higher vitamin D intake needed to reduce cancer risk (PR)
UC San Diego and Creighton researchers report in Anticancer Research that adults need 4,000 to 8,000 IU of vitamin D a day, far above the 400 IU that defeated rickets, to reach blood levels associated with about halving the risk of breast and colon cancer, multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes.

Vitamin D Deficiency Rickets: Yet Another Family Shattered
A Vitamin D Council newsletter carrying a letter from a young mother whose family was affected by vitamin D deficiency rickets, criticism of the BMJ for declining to revisit a decades-old review, and announcements about a new website and a GrassrootsHealth vitamin D study.

Health Claim Filed for Vitamin D
The Alliance for Natural Health USA has petitioned the FDA for a qualified health claim for vitamin D. Mercola adds that in a 12-week study of 33 adults taking 50,000 IU weekly, D3 raised blood levels 87% more than D2 and the body stored it two to three times better.

Vitamin D Council Newsletter - Purity Products
John Cannell writes that he has retired after 15 years at Atascadero State Hospital to work on vitamin D full time. Donations to the Vitamin D Council never grew enough to fund that; what made it possible, he says, was Jahn Levin and Purity Products, which markets the formula he designed.

Vitamin D important for your lung function
An Australian study in mice linked vitamin D deficiency to reduced lung volume and function. A Chinese study of 435 asthma patients found nearly 90 percent had low vitamin D, and levels tracked positively with forced expiratory volume in one second.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency may hamper lung function
In mice, Australian researchers found vitamin D deficiency reduced lung volume and lung function compared with controls. Lead author Graeme Zosky called it the first direct mechanistic evidence that deficiency alters lung development, which may help explain links to obstructive lung disease.

Vitamin E may help you live longer
In a randomized trial of 10,837 Finnish participants over 65, vitamin E cut mortality by 24 percent among those aged 71 and older but made no difference at ages 65 to 70. The piece also notes the American Heart Association's 2004 warning that 400 IU a day or more can raise death risk.

Vitamin D Newsletter: The untold need for vitamin D during pregnancy
A letter to the Vitamin D Newsletter from a radiographer whose infant son had unexplained fractures, with Dr. Cannell's reply arguing that undiagnosed vitamin D deficiency may explain some infant fractures that were blamed on abuse.

Vitamin E may increase the life expectancy of restricted groups of men (PR)
In a Finnish trial of 10,837 participants, vitamin E did not affect mortality at ages 65 to 70 but cut it 24 percent from age 71. Among 2,284 men with above-median vitamin C intake who smoked under a pack a day it added two years, while 80 percent of the cohort saw no effect.
Vitamins
Vitamin E rich foods
A ranked table lists foods supplying at least 10% of the 15 mg daily vitamin E RDA, with milligrams and calories per standard serving. Fortified cereals, sunflower seeds, almonds, sunflower and cottonseed oils, hazelnuts and turnip greens lead the list.

Vitamin D very low in multiple sclerosis patients
A French study comparing 170 multiple sclerosis patients with 170 age-matched controls found lower serum 25-OH vitamin D in the patients, 14.5 against 16.7 mcg/mL, with levels inversely correlated to disability. The authors suggest screening MS patients for deficiency.

The brain benefits of folic acid
In a double-blind trial in rural Nepal, women took iron and folic acid, with or without zinc or other micronutrients, from early pregnancy through three months postpartum. Their children, tested at ages 7 to 9, scored better on working memory, inhibitory control and fine motor tasks.
