Rats with Alzheimer's disease fed a vitamin D-free diet did worse in the Morris water maze than those on a supplemented diet, Iranian researchers report. Supplementation itself did not significantly change maze performance, leading the authors to urge protecting patients from deficiency.

Too much folate may boost breast cancer risk - study
Among 70,656 postmenopausal women followed from 1992, 3,898 developed breast cancer, and those in the highest quintile of dietary folate intake had a 12% higher risk. The authors saw no dose-response trend, and found no link for vitamin B-6, B-12 or total folate.

Could vitamin D deficiency explain sepsis risk in elderly people?
A JAMA study of 516 survivors of severe sepsis, average age 77, found 60 percent worsened in cognitive or physical function, and survivors were 3.33 times more likely to develop moderate or severe cognitive impairment. One health observer suggested vitamin D deficiency may play a part.

Antioxidants may help prevent breast cancer
An Indian study in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention measured plasma antioxidants in 225 women and found higher beta-carotene, vitamin E and vitamin C accompanying significantly lower breast cancer risk. Higher vitamin A levels went the other way, tracking with higher risk.

Could vitamin D work better than influenza vaccine?
The CDC urges everyone six months and older to take the 2010-2011 flu shot. The piece counters that neither cdc.gov nor flu.gov mentions vitamin D3, and cites researchers William Grant and John Cannell, who argue high doses boost innate immunity against influenza.

Vitamin D helps prevent breast cancer recurrence, death - new study
Among 512 women with early breast cancer followed an average of 11.6 years, those deficient in vitamin D were 94 percent more likely to see a distant recurrence and 73 percent more likely to die than women with sufficient levels; after adjustment the gaps narrowed to 71 and 60 percent but held.

HIV carriers at risk of vitamin D deficiency
Blood samples from 115 Danish men with HIV showed 20 percent vitamin D deficient and 4 percent severely deficient, with another 27 percent insufficient. Levels were not linked to age, years infected, antiretroviral therapy or CD4 count.

Could Coenzyme Q10 boost breast cancer risk?
In a case-control study of 160 postmenopausal women with breast cancer and 289 matched controls, those with the highest plasma coenzyme Q10 were more than twice as likely to be diagnosed. The authors caution that high levels may reflect supplement use rather than cause the risk.

Multivitamin use cuts risk of heart attack
In a Swedish cohort of 31,671 women with no history of cardiovascular disease, followed 10.2 years, multivitamin users were 27 percent less likely to have a heart attack, and users of five years or more 41 percent less likely. The authors stress the findings are observational.

B-vitamins may prevent lung cancer
In the EPIC cohort of about 520,000 people followed at least six years, those with the highest serum vitamin B6 and methionine were 56 and 48 percent less likely to develop lung cancer than those with the lowest. Having both above average was tied to 59 percent lower risk.

Vitamin D protects against Parkinson disease
Among 3,173 Finnish adults followed 29 years, those with serum vitamin D in the highest quartile were 67 percent less likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson disease, after adjustment for factors including smoking, BMI and activity. The study is observational and shows no causal link.

Vitamin D helps prevent breast cancer
A German Cancer Research Center meta-analysis of ten studies found each 20 ng/mL rise in serum vitamin D accompanying 41 percent lower breast cancer risk in case-control studies and 8 percent in nested case-control studies. A Shanghai team's meta-analysis reached a similar conclusion.

Pink News: Aggressive Breast Cancer Linked To Vitamin D Deficiency
Researchers led by Susan Steck followed 107 women diagnosed with breast cancer in the previous five years, 60 of them black, and found African-American women had lower vitamin D levels than white women. The study links deficiency to a higher risk of aggressive breast cancer.

Vitamin D: More Effective in Fighting Breast Cancer than Wearing Pink?
Engel and colleagues compared serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D in 636 women with breast cancer and 1,272 without, matched on age, menopausal status and collection details. The piece stresses the work does not prove vitamin D deficiency causes the disease.

Could This be the Key Factor Spiking the Rise in Dementia and Alzheimer's?
In a two-year trial of 168 volunteers with mild cognitive impairment, the brains of those taking high-dose folic acid, B6 and B12 shrank 0.76 percent a year against 1.08 percent on placebo, which researchers say may slow progression toward dementia.
