In the Swedish Obese Subjects study, obese participants who cut their BMI by five units within two years had diabetes rates of 2.0 to 3.4 percent, against 6.5 to 9.3 percent among those whose weight held steady. Remission rates did not depend on how obese patients were to begin with.

FDA alert: Cancer-causing agent found in Japanese rapid weight loss diet pills yellow and green
The FDA warns that Japan Rapid Weight Loss Diet Pills, sold on websites including Amazon and distributed by Xiushentang, contain phenolphthalein, a laxative the National Toxicology Program named a carcinogen in 2010. Consumers should stop using the pills and throw them away.

Does Bioslim Work to Help Weight Loss? - Dietary Supplements News
Bioslim's maker calls its diet pills a medical breakthrough but cites no research. The writer found one small trial: 87 overweight adults in Cape Town took branded or unbranded bioslim or placebo for four weeks, and bioslim produced no weight loss, not even a placebo effect.
Food
Eating Chocolate helps lose weight?
Beatrice Golomb's team surveyed 1,000 healthy adults and found frequent chocolate eaters consumed more calories and saturated fat yet weighed less, about 5 to 7 pounds less at five servings a week. Frequency, not total amount, tracked with weight.
Drug
Anti-obesity drugs help weight loss, so does modified lifestyle - review
A review of 94 studies covering 24,808 people found orlistat, sibutramine and rimonabant each produced modest weight loss - 2.65 kg for orlistat at three months, 11.23 kg for rimonabant. Lifestyle advice alone also worked but less well. Sibutramine and rimonabant have since been withdrawn.
Lifestyle
Education Makes Weight Loss Possible Even When Eating Out
Thirty-five perimenopausal women took a six-week Mindful Restaurant Eating program and lost an average of 1.7 kg while cutting about 297 calories a day, without eating out less often, according to the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.
Disease
Weight loss helps type 2 diabetes people to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease
Rena Wing of Brown and colleagues studied 5,145 people with type 2 diabetes and found those who lost 5 to 10 percent of their weight in a year were markedly more likely to improve HbA1c, blood pressure, triglycerides and HDL. Weight loss showed no link to lower LDL cholesterol.
Obesity
Taking dieting breaks helps weight loss
In a four-month study of 115 women, those who restricted calories just two days a week lost about 9 pounds against 5 pounds on a standard Mediterranean diet, and cut insulin and cancer-promoting hormones more. Researchers note the setting was tightly controlled and want more work.
Legal Actions
FDA, FTC warns companies selling HCG products for weight loss
The FDA and FTC sent warning letters to seven companies selling over-the-counter homeopathic hCG drops, pellets and sprays for weight loss. hCG is approved as an injectable drug for female infertility, not weight loss, and the products pair with diets as low as 500 calories a day.
Obesity
Smaller plates lead to greater weight loss
Cornell psychologist Brian Wansink told the American Psychological Association that container size drives intake: extra-large buckets led moviegoers to eat 45% more fresh popcorn, and short wide glasses held 37% more liquid. He advises using salad plates and not waiting to feel full.
Lifestyle
Weight loss, metabolism and the diabetes link
Columbia and Duke researchers compared severely obese diabetic patients who had weight loss surgery with those on strict diets. Both groups lost 20 pounds, but circulating amino acids tied to obesity and insulin resistance fell significantly only in the surgery patients.
Lifestyle
Walking, weight loss increase older, obese people's mobility
Wake Forest researchers split 288 adults aged 60 to 79 into physical activity and activity-plus-weight-loss groups and followed them 18 months. Measured by a 400-meter walk, mobility improved 5 percent on average and by as much as 20 percent.
Lifestyle
Newest weight loss strategy: Meditate before eating your meal
A Carnegie Mellon study led by Carey Morewedge found people ate less of a food after repeatedly imagining eating it; those who imagined 30 M&Ms ate fewer than those who imagined 3. The effect was specific to the food imagined, and Morewedge said it does not transfer to smoking.
Diet
High protein diet good for your weight, but not all proteins are the same
A New England Journal of Medicine trial of overweight adults who had already lost 11 kg found a high-protein, low-glycemic diet best at preventing weight regain, though a low-protein, low-glycemic diet may work about as well. A Circulation study ties red meat to coronary heart disease.
Diet
Low protein, low GI diet also good for weight loss
Copenhagen researchers tested five low-fat diets in 938 overweight adults after an eight-week 800-calorie phase. Only the low-protein, high-glycemic-index diet brought significant weight gain; the low-protein, low-GI diet did not, despite a press release crediting high protein.
Diet
Twinkie diet and Mediterranean diet, which is better for weight loss?
Kansas State nutrition professor Mark Haub ate mostly snacks and sweets at 1,800 calories a day and lost 27 pounds in two months, cutting LDL cholesterol 20% and triglycerides 39%. Experts say such a diet is not sustainable and the weight returns with old habits.
Drug
FDA Rejects Weight Loss Drug Qnexa
The FDA declined to approve Vivus's weight loss drug Qnexa, asking for more data on birth defect risk and increased heart rate. An advisory committee had already recommended against it on safety grounds. Qnexa combines phentermine and topiramate, each with its own known adverse effects.
Disease
Could weight loss help migraine headache?
The FDA approved Botox for chronic migraine, though a phase 3 trial found patients on it went headache-free 9 of 28 days versus 6.7 on placebo. Studies tying obesity to migraine suggest losing weight may also help manage the condition.
