A roundup: a Harvard review finds Parkinson's and Alzheimer's have been linked to reduced cancer risk through shared biological pathways, and an Oncogene study reports rats given 21 weeks of zinc deficiency plus low-dose NMBA had a 66.7 percent chance of esophageal carcinoma.

Zinc lozenges may shorten common cold duration (PR)
Harri Hemila's meta-analysis of 13 placebo-controlled trials found daily zinc doses under 75 mg had no effect on colds, while zinc acetate above 75 mg a day averaged a 42 percent shorter cold and other zinc salts a 20 percent reduction. Adverse effects included bad taste.

Zinc lozenges shorten common cold duration
Pooling trials in The Open Respiratory Medicine Journal, Hemila found daily doses above 75 mg of zinc in lozenges shortened colds by 20 to 42%, while trials using less than 75 mg showed no benefit. High doses taste bad but no long-term side effects have been reported.

Dietary Supplement Fact Sheet: Zinc
Zinc helps the immune system fight bacteria and viruses, builds proteins and DNA, heals wounds and supports taste and smell. Daily amounts run from 2 mg in early infancy to 11 mg for adult men and 8 mg for women. Oysters are the best source; red meat, poultry and seafood follow.

Zinc battles the common cold
A Cochrane review adding 15 trials with 1,360 subjects found people who took zinc within a day of cold symptoms were likelier to have recovered by day seven, and children taking zinc syrup or lozenges for five months or longer caught fewer colds. The best dose and formulation remain unknown.

Adequate Zinc Eases Pneumonia in Elderly
In an analysis of nursing facility residents, those with normal blood zinc levels were about 50 percent less likely to develop pneumonia than residents with low levels, and they also had fewer antibiotic prescriptions, shorter pneumonia and lower mortality.

Zinc rich foods
A USDA table ranking selected foods by zinc per common measure: raw eastern oysters lead at 76.28 mg for six medium, followed by breaded fried oysters at 74.06 mg and several fortified cereals at about 15 mg a serving.

Zinc Could Saves Lives of Children With Diarrhea
A Cochrane review covering more than 6,000 children found strong evidence that zinc supplementation helps children with diarrhea in developing countries, but only in infants over six months old. Zinc shortened both acute and persistent diarrhea, the lead investigator said.
