By David Liu, PHDSunday Sept 30, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- P. Taxel of University of Connecticut in Farmington, CT and colleagues has recently published a report in Maturitas reminding breast cancer survivors of the risk for future osteoporosis they are facing.Women with early stage breast cancer may be at higher risk of osteoporosis because chemotherapy induces amenorrhea and anti-estrogen medications promote bone loss, according to the authors.Bone health in breast cancer survivors should be an important part of survivor ship care and carefully managed. Osteoporosis can lead to fracture often without prior warning signs or symptoms."Clinicians must be cognizant of the underlying risk for osteoporosis and co-morbid conditions and/or medications that accelerate risk of fracture (in breast cancer survivors)," the authors advise.
