Dear XXXX,
What do Antarctic penguins, honeybees, your baby or toddler and your sofa all have in common? All have been found to be tainted with fire retardants.
Flame retardant chemicals are so ubiquitous it’s difficult to limit your exposure. The widespread use of these toxic and cancer-causing chemicals in children’s products and upholstered furniture puts the health of our families and our environment at risk.
We need the government to step in to get the most dangerous fire retardant chemicals off the market.
The Children and Firefighter Protection Act introduced in Congress by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) would ban 10 toxic flame retardant chemicals from being used in children’s products and upholstered home furniture. It would also empower the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to review the health risks of exposure to fire retardants and make recommendations to restrict their use.
Sen. Schumer’s bill represents a key opportunity to cut our exposure to several key toxic flame retardants. And the only way it’s going to move through Congress is if you take action today.
This summer, EWG and Duke University released a groundbreaking study that found a biomarker of one cancer-causing fire retardant called TDCIPP in the bodies of all 22 mothers and 26 children tested.
The level of the biomarker was nearly five times higher on average in the children than in their mothers. In the most extreme case, a child had 23 times the level the mother did.
The frightening reality is that many of us are unknowingly exposing ourselves and our families to toxic chemicals in everyday home goods.
To make sure this vital legislation keeps moving, we need your voice right now!
Thank you for taking action,
