FDA to accept public comments on endocrine-disrupting phthalates in food until Sept. 16.
EWG urges readers to tell the FDA to get phthalates out of food before the comment deadline, which an editor's note says may be Sept. 19 rather than Sept. 16. The plasticizers leach from packaging and vinyl tubing and are linked to genital defects in boys, asthma and endometriosis.

Burger King: Say NO to GE Apples
A petition urges Burger King to keep genetically engineered Arctic Apples out of its meals. Campaigners call the non-browning apple unnecessary, warn that masking the browning signal could hide fruit that is no longer fresh, and note FDA does no pre-market safety testing.

National Honey Bee Day - 3 steps to save bees
The Center for Food Safety says neonicotinoid seed coatings are among the biggest threats to bees: only about 5 percent of the chemical enters the plant, leaving 95 percent for dust, soil and runoff. Nearly all US corn and much popcorn grows from coated seed.

Food & Water Watch Denounces Approval of ChemChina-Syngenta Mega-Merger
Executive director Wenonah Hauter says the $43 billion takeover, waved through by the secretive CFIUS panel, will consolidate power over farmers, raise their input prices and narrow seed choices. She urges the Justice Department to reject the proposed Dow-DuPont merger.

Dietary folate lowers gastric cancer
A South Korean case-control study in Cancer Research found people with high dietary folate intake were 30 percent less likely to be diagnosed with gastric cancer than those with low intake, with the protection strongest among carriers of certain gene variants.
Diet
High methionine diet promotes cancer growth
A review in Cancer Treatment Reviews suggests the amino acid methionine may partly explain why high-protein, animal-heavy diets promote cancer growth. The authors say methionine-restricted diets have curbed cancer growth in animals and humans, and note vegan diets tend to be low in it.

Ketogenic diet inhibits metastatic cancer
A 2013 PLOS One study found mice with metastatic cancer fed a ketogenic diet survived 57% longer than mice on a normal diet, and 78% longer when the diet was combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen alone did not slow the cancer.

Paul Connett debated Professor Mike Berridge on New Zealand television. FAN says Connett showed that a review Berridge relied on used misleading language to obscure a 7-point IQ difference between children with elevated fluoride exposure and those without.
Cancer
Alkalizer suppresses cancer growth
A mouse study found the mineral supplement Basepulver, given daily by oral gavage, significantly slowed melanoma growth, with 8 g/l the best dose, and cell culture work showed dose-dependent inhibition of human and mouse melanoma cells. The rationale is that tumour acidity aids cancer growth.
