Mice bred to model Alzheimer's and given vitamin C solutions for six months showed less oxidative brain damage, fewer soluble amyloid-beta oligomers and slower behavioural decline. Vitamin C did not affect brain plaque deposition.

Treating vascular risk factors may cut Alzheimer's disease risk
In a Neurology study of 837 people with mild cognitive impairment, those who had all their vascular risk factors treated for five years were 39 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer's than those treated for none; partial treatment cut risk 26 percent.
Disease
Biomarker found to predict prognosis of Alzheimer's disease
UCLA researchers report that the immune gene MGAT3 may serve as a biomarker for Alzheimer's risk. Comparing immune cells from 20 patients and 20 healthy people, they found MGAT3 levels tracked how well the cells cleared amyloid beta, and curcumin raised clearance in the lab.

Speaking a second language delays onset of dementia
York University researchers compared 450 Alzheimer's patients, half of them bilingual, and found diagnosis came about four years later in those speaking two languages, whose scans showed more advanced deterioration at similar function. The study did not prove a second language lowers dementia risk.
Minerals
Too much iron linked to high risk of Alzheimer's disease
Researchers in Argentina reported in the International Journal of Alzheimer's Disease that accumulation of copper, zinc and iron is linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, with high iron consistently found in the brains of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients.
Nutrition
Blood test may diagnose Alzheimer's in its early stage
Scripps researchers compared six Alzheimer's patients with six healthy people and six with Parkinson's, and found synthetic molecules that captured three-fold higher IgG antibody levels only in the Alzheimer's group. The work needs repeating in larger and earlier-stage groups.
Food
Mediterranean diet and physical exercise cut risk of Alzheimer's disease
Following 1,880 dementia-free elderly New Yorkers, researchers recorded 282 Alzheimer's cases over 5.4 years. Those adhering most closely to a Mediterranean diet were 40 percent less likely to be diagnosed, and the most physically active up to 33 percent less likely.
Food
Digested green tea prevents dementia like Alzheimer's
Newcastle University researchers found that gut enzymes break green tea into compounds that guard brain cells more effectively than the undigested ones, by interacting with hydrogen peroxide and beta-amyloid. Digested green tea also slowed tumour cell growth in their lab tests.
Healthcare
Hospice care good for nursing home residents with advanced dementia
Researchers followed 323 nursing home residents with advanced dementia and their proxies for up to 18 months. The 26 percent referred to hospice more often received opioids for pain and treatment for breathlessness, and their proxies reported fewer unmet needs in the last week of life.
Disease
Low bone mineral density linked to high risk of Alzheimer's disease
Following 2,019 residents aged 65 and over for five years, researchers in Chongqing identified 132 Alzheimer's cases and linked them to low baseline bone mineral density and faster bone loss, alongside smoking, daily drinking and lower leptin. Vitamin D is one proposed common thread.
Food
Four Tablespoons of This "Brain Food" May Prevent Alzheimer's
Mercola relays Dr. Mary Newport's videos on ketone bodies, an alternative brain fuel the body makes from coconut oil, which she credits with her husband's recovery from Alzheimer's. He calls it a promising natural strategy while rejecting her use of drugs and a vaccine study.
Disease
The Alzheimer's and heart attack connection
University of Bologna researchers examined the DNA of 1,800 people and report in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease a shared genetic predisposition in 30 percent of heart attack patients and 40 percent of those with Alzheimer's, involving genes that control inflammation and cholesterol metabolism.
Vitamins
Vitamin D helps prevent Alzheimer's disease
Rats with Alzheimer's disease fed a vitamin D-free diet did worse in the Morris water maze than those on a vitamin D-supplemented diet, Iranian researchers report. Supplementing 1,25(OH)2D3 did not significantly change maze performance; the authors say patients should be protected from inadequacy.
Lifestyle
Cigarettes smoke boosts Alzheimer's disease risk
A meta-analysis of 43 studies found that case-control studies with tobacco industry-affiliated authors reported smoking protects against Alzheimer's disease, while those without industry ties did not. Eighteen independent case-control studies showed a 9% risk reduction that was not significant.
Food
Eating fish may not help Alzheimer's disease or dementia - study
Following 5,395 older adults in Rotterdam for 10 years, with 465 dementia cases, researchers found no association between eating fish or fatty fish, or omega-3 intake, and the risk of dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
Lifestyle
Cigarette smoking in midlife linked to Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia
The FDA proposed nine larger text warnings and colour graphic images for cigarette packs and advertisements, taking public comment from November 2010 to January 2011. HHS puts smoking deaths at 443,000 a year, and studies also link smoking to dementia.
Vitamins
High intake of dietary vitamin E may reduce dementia risk
Rotterdam researchers followed 5,395 people aged 55 and older for about a decade and found those in the highest third of dietary vitamin E intake were 25 percent less likely to develop dementia. Vitamin C, beta carotene and flavonoids showed no link once confounders were taken into account.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency linked to learning deficit in Alzheimer's animals
Rats with Alzheimer's disease fed a vitamin D-free diet did worse in the Morris water maze than those on a supplemented diet, Iranian researchers report. Supplementation itself did not significantly change maze performance, leading the authors to urge protecting patients from deficiency.
