An ARS-funded analysis of data from the AREDS trial associated a diet high in vegetables, legumes, fruit, whole grains, tomatoes and seafood with lower odds of age-related macular degeneration than a diet heavier in red meat and refined grains.

Other Diseases
Healthy lifestyle prevents stroke
Among 11,450 Swedish men already at high risk of stroke, those following a healthy lifestyle (five daily servings of produce, little processed meat, no smoking, 150 minutes of activity, a BMI of 18.5 to 25 and limited alcohol) were 79 percent less likely to have a stroke.
Obesity
Intentional weight loss lowers death risk
A meta-analysis of 15 randomized trials with 17,186 participants found intentional weight loss, averaging 5.5 kg, was tied to a 15 percent lower risk of death from any cause. Similar results held among people aged 55 and older followed four years or more.
Obesity
Oxytocin helps weight loss
In fructose-fed obese rhesus monkeys, four weeks of oxytocin cut body weight by 3.3 percent, lowered 12-hour food intake by 16 to 27 percent depending on dose, raised energy expenditure 14 percent during the dark cycle and signaled more fat breakdown, without nausea or diarrhea.
Obesity
Drinking excess water does not help weight loss
Boston Children's Hospital researchers tested the common weight-loss advice to drink eight cups of water a day and found that increasing water intake had no effect on body weight in adolescents.
Cancer
Hormone therapy, alcohol boost breast cancer risk
Following 30,789 women aged 50 and over for more than a decade, researchers recorded 1,579 breast cancers and found hormone therapy raised risk at any body weight, with alcohol adding to that increase. The associations held only for estrogen receptor positive tumors.
Obesity
Celastrol may be the most potent anti-obesity agent
In mice, celastrol, a compound from thunder god vine roots, suppressed food intake and produced 45% weight loss by restoring leptin sensitivity, and did nothing in mice lacking leptin or its receptor. The authors say clinical trials must still confirm efficacy and safety.
Other Diseases
Mid-life proteinuria linked to late-life dementia
Among 8,006 Japanese-American men in the Honolulu Heart Program, dementia incidence rose from 13.8 to 39.7 per 1,000 person-years across no, trace and positive mid-life proteinuria. Positive proteinuria tracked with all-cause dementia, but not Alzheimer's or vascular dementia specifically.
Diabetes
Diabetes and Chronic Pain Banished After Drinking This for 28 Days
Mercola describes a film following eight people with 22 chronic conditions between them through a 28-day juice fast. All eight lost weight, felt energised and saw symptoms drop sharply; one person's diabetes and another's chronic pain resolved completely.
Cancer
Garlic prevents gastric cancer
A meta-analysis in Nutrition and Cancer pooled 17 studies and found the highest garlic intake linked to a 50% lower risk of gastric cancer, and any intake to about 25% lower risk. About 60% of cases are caused by H. pylori, which makes carcinogens in a high-salt environment.
Cancer
Elevated cholesterol and triglycerides may increase the risk for prostate cancer recurrence
Among 843 men who had a radical prostatectomy and had never taken statins, those with triglycerides of 150 mg/dL or higher faced a 35% higher risk of prostate cancer recurrence, Duke researchers report. They suggest normalizing lipid levels may reduce that risk.
Obesity
Grapefruit juice stems weight gain in mice fed a high-fat diet, study finds
Mice on a high-fat diet gained 18 percent less weight when they drank clarified, no-pulp grapefruit juice instead of water, and showed better glucose, insulin and triacylglycerol levels, UC Berkeley researchers report in PLOS ONE. Grapefruit growers funded the work but had no say in it.
Obesity
Weight Loss Success: Lessons Learned from Studies of Successful Losers
Members of the National Weight Control Registry, most of whom have kept weight off more than five years, credit a changed lifestyle rather than a diet. Seventy-eight percent eat breakfast daily, 75 percent weigh themselves weekly, and they watch under 10 hours of television a week.
Obesity
Study confirms efficacy of Hoodia gordonii as weight loss supplement
Smith and Krygsman gave 12 lean and 12 obese male rats placebo or Hoodia gordonii extract at 80 or 160 mg per kg twice daily for 14 days. Every rat on the extract lost significant weight, but the researchers concluded the loss came from muscle as well as fat.
Cancer
Dietary fat affects outcome of breast cancer
In mice given human breast cancer cells and treated with paclitaxel, a diet containing stearate cut lung metastasis by 50 percent compared with corn oil and low-fat diets, and reduced the number and size of metastatic nodules.
Obesity
Some weight loss supplements OxyELITE Pro linked to acute hepatitis
A letter to the editor in The American Journal of Gastroenterology reports the outbreak. The FDA had already alerted the public to the acute hepatitis cases and later issued a consumer update about the recall of the product.
Obesity
Some weight loss supplements commonly used in 2012
A 2011 Obesity Reviews review named caffeine, carnitine, green tea, conjugated linoleic acid, forskolin, chromium, kelp and fucoxanthin as the most commonly used fat burners, while other ingredients lacked convincing evidence. Diet and exercise still matter, the piece adds.
Obesity
N-3 helps weight loss
A French study found rats on a calorie-restricted diet supplemented with long-chain omega-3 fatty acids for 10 weeks lost more weight than rats given oleic or alpha-linolenic acid, with no effect on muscle weight. Evidence also suggests omega-3s improve insulin sensitivity.
