Japanese researchers fed obesity-model mice white, yellow or red rice koji alongside a high-fat diet for four weeks. The koji groups gained less weight and carried less adipose tissue, and white and red koji lowered blood glucose. The authors say the mechanisms may differ by koji type.

How to prevent cardiovascular disease - WHO
A WHO summary notes cardiovascular disease causes a third of deaths worldwide. It rates as convincing the evidence that fruit, vegetables, fish oils, linoleic acid, potassium and activity lower risk, and that saturated and trans fats, sodium, excess weight and heavy drinking raise it.
Cancer
Weight Associated with Cancer Risk
In the medical records of 5.24 million UK patients, 17 of the 22 cancers assessed were positively associated with higher body mass index, among them cancers of the uterus, gallbladder, kidney, cervix, thyroid, liver, colon and ovary.
Cancer
Egg eaters at higher risk for ovarian cancer
A Chinese meta-analysis of 12 studies found women eating the most eggs were 20 percent more likely to develop ovarian cancer. The link was significant in case-control but not cohort studies, and the authors say larger cohorts are needed; the data do not show cause.
Diabetes
Type 2 diabetics should cut calorie intake
Fifty-seven middle-aged obese Korean women cut 422 calories a day for 12 weeks, losing 2.7 kg/m2 of BMI, 10.2 percent of body fat and 5 percent of waist circumference. Blood pressure, cholesterol, fasting glucose and insulin fell while insulin sensitivity rose.

What to eat to improve your fertility?
A Polish review reports that monounsaturated fats from peanut, sunflower, safflower and olive oil, along with produce high in protein and nonheme iron, may improve women's fertility, while trans fats and high-glycemic carbohydrates may reduce it.
Diabetes
Vitamin D helps diabetes mellitus
A review of studies in people aged 30 and over concluded that vitamin D supplementation lowered HbA1c in African Americans with type 2 diabetes. It found no association with LDL or HDL cholesterol or triglycerides.
Cancer
Vitamin D prevents breast cancer
A case-control study of 60 Iranian women with newly diagnosed breast cancer and 116 healthy women found those whose clothing fully blocked sunlight were 10 times likelier to have the disease. Half the subjects were severely vitamin D deficient. The design cannot establish cause.
Cancer
Weight loss may reverse basal-like breast cancer ***
In obese mice bred to develop mammary tumours, switching from a high-fat to a low-fat diet just before tumour onset reversed tumour progression. Weight loss blunted the HGF/c-Met pathway and lowered insulin and the leptin-to-adiponectin ratio.
Obesity
Chinese ginseng prevents obesity in mice fed high fat diet
Virginia Tech researchers report in the Journal of Medicinal Food that mice on a high-fat diet given Chinese ginseng gained less fat mass, handled glucose better and avoided hypertension. Ginseng also lowered plasma insulin and leptin and promoted lipid oxidation in the liver.
Diabetes
Anti-diabetic Activity of Ayurveda Herbs – A Review
Ayurveda researchers in Rajasthan review herbs with hypoglycaemic properties described in classical texts such as the Charaka and Sushruta Samhita, noting that existing hypoglycemic drugs do not control blood glucose over long periods and carry many side effects.

High Cholesterol Increases Risk of Breast Cancer
Researchers followed 664,159 women in the UK and found breast cancer risk 64 percent higher among those with high cholesterol, according to a report presented at a cardiovascular biology meeting in Barcelona. The work builds on earlier research linking obesity to breast cancer risk.

New guidelines for Alzheimer's disease prevention
Speakers at the 2013 International Conference on Nutrition and the Brain drew up seven dietary and lifestyle guidelines: minimize saturated and trans fats, make vegetables, legumes, fruit and whole grains the staples, take vitamin E from food, and get at least 2.4 ug of B12 daily.
Obesity
Exercise-induced weight loss weakens bone strength
In a pilot study, 14 obese postmenopausal women who lost an average 3 kg over four months of endurance exercise showed a significant drop in bone strength. The authors say weight loss may weaken bone before changes in bone mineral density can be detected.

Breaking news: Green coffee bean extract may help high blood pressure
A meta-analysis in the Journal of Human Hypertension found chlorogenic acid supplements lowered systolic blood pressure by 4.31 mmHg and diastolic by 3.68 mmHg, with no adverse events reported. Green coffee beans are rich in these acids.
Diabetes
Vegan diet better than doctors proscribed diet for type 2 diabetes mellitus
A report in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition finds low-fat vegan diets controlled blood sugar better than American Diabetes Association diets in type 2 diabetes, and that vegan dietary portfolios improved blood lipids more than National Cholesterol Education Program diets.

Treatment for idiopathic male infertility
A review in Seminars in Reproductive Medicine reports that a third of male infertility has no known cause. For those men, doctors commonly try empirical treatments: hormones such as gonadotropins, anti-estrogens and aromatase inhibitors, or carnitine, lycopene, glutathione and vitamin E.
