Vitamin D inhibits oral cancer growth
In three oral cancer cell lines, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 at 100 nmol inhibited growth by 19.7% in CAL27 and 43.6% in SCC25, cut cell viability and activated the caspase and bcl:bax pathways. This was laboratory work, not a trial in patients.

Calcium supplements prevent colorectal cancer
A dose-response meta-analysis found each extra 300 mg of total calcium a day was associated with an 8% lower colorectal cancer risk across 15 studies, and each 300 mg of supplemental calcium with a 9% lower risk in six studies.

Lifestyle factors and reproductive health: taking control of your fertility
This literature review covers how modifiable habits shape fertility in both men and women: age at starting a family, nutrition, weight, exercise, stress, and environmental and occupational exposures. Smoking, illicit drugs, alcohol and caffeine can harm it. Infertility affects 10 to 15% of couples.

High cholesterol inked to high risk of breast cancer
A Science report finds 27-hydroxycholesterol, a cholesterol metabolite, increases estrogen-receptor-dependent breast tumor growth and metastasis in mouse models, suggesting that lowering cholesterol or blocking the CYP27A1 enzyme may help.
Obesity
Fucoxanthin for weight loss
Animal work found the seaweed carotenoid shrank white adipose tissue by promoting fat burning, and a 2009 trial pairing 2.4 mg of fucoxanthin with pomegranate seed oil reported 5 kg of weight loss over 16 weeks in obese premenopausal women with liver disease.

Research studies show mango may help prevent breast cancer
Texas A&M's Susanne Talcott ran one cell-culture study and one mouse study testing whether the polyphenols in mango carry the anti-inflammatory and cell-toxicity properties that earlier work attributed to such compounds.

Decaffeinated green coffee bean extract for weight loss
Mice on a high-fat diet supplemented with 0.3% decaffeinated green coffee bean extract for 11 weeks did not gain weight, and 0.9% was no more potent. The authors put 0.3% at about 1,460 mg a day for a 60-kg person — ten times the chlorogenic acid of dark roasted coffee.

Spice turmeric helps type 2 diabetes mellitus patients
Sixty type 2 diabetes patients on metformin took 2 grams of turmeric daily or placebo for four weeks. The turmeric group showed lower fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipid peroxidation and hsCRP, plus higher total antioxidant levels and an improved LDL/HDL ratio.

Protein, Fat, and Dairy Linked to Prostate Cancer
Research presented to the American Urological Association analyzed diets of almost 10,000 men: a high-carbohydrate, low-protein, low-fat pattern went with 60-70% lower prostate cancer risk and a fiber-rich diet with 70-80% lower. Milk tracked with advanced disease.

Spirulina may prevent sin cancer - study
Kobe University researchers report that dietary spirulina platensis lowered skin cancer risk in both repair-enzyme-deficient and normal mice exposed to UV, suppressing tumour induction and development. They credit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The work used mice only.

Spirulina prevents breast cancer - study
In rats given the carcinogen DMBA, spirulina supplementation cut mammary tumor rates from 87 percent to 13 percent, according to The American Journal of Pathology. Lab tests showed it slowed cell proliferation and triggered apoptosis by raising Bax and lowering Bcl-2.

Trans fat linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus - new study
Among 3,076 adults free of diabetes in the Cardiovascular Health Study, those with the highest trans fat intake were 49 percent more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes than those with the lowest, according to a Harvard-led study published in Circulation.
