University of Chicago researchers calculated that delaying blood pressure medication a year after a middle-aged diabetes diagnosis costs roughly two days of life expectancy, and a ten-year delay five months. They suggest spending year one on self-management and lifestyle changes.

Disease
Sleep disorder linked to behavior problems in young diabetics
A study in Sleep of 50 children with type 1 diabetes aged 10 to 16 found they spent more time in lighter sleep than healthy peers, and about a third had sleep apnea with significantly higher blood sugar. The lead researcher says sleep problems may hinder blood sugar control.
Disease
Type 2 diabetes mellitus boosts risk of pancreatic cancer
A review in Molecular Carcinogenesis by MD Anderson's Donghui Li reports that people with type 2 diabetes face a 50 to 100 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer, argues the evidence points to cause rather than mere association, and notes metformin use lowers the risk.
Drug
Rheumatoid arthritis drug helps cut type 2 diabetes mellitus risk
Among 1,127 adults with newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis at Geisinger Health System, hydroxychloroquine users had 6.2 new diabetes cases per 1,000 patients a year against 22.0 among non-users, and were 71% less likely to be diagnosed after adjustment for other factors.
Disease
Obesity, diabetes boost death risk from colorectal cancer
Two Journal of Clinical Oncology studies found people who were overweight or had type 2 diabetes when diagnosed with colorectal cancer fared worse. In the first, of 2,303 patients, being overweight at the outset carried a 30 percent higher risk of death from any cause and 35 percent from the cancer.
Disease
Weight loss helps type 2 diabetes people to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease
Rena Wing of Brown and colleagues studied 5,145 people with type 2 diabetes and found those who lost 5 to 10 percent of their weight in a year were markedly more likely to improve HbA1c, blood pressure, triglycerides and HDL. Weight loss showed no link to lower LDL cholesterol.
Disease
Diabetes linked to elevated cancer risk
In a Japanese study of nearly 98,000 adults, men with diabetes were 27 percent more likely and women 21 percent more likely to be diagnosed with cancer. Risks ran highest for liver, pancreatic and kidney cancer in men, and ovarian, liver and stomach cancer in women.
Disease
Depression in diabetics linked to higher risk for dementia
Among 19,239 diabetes patients aged 30 to 75 followed three to five years, 2.1 percent of those with depression were diagnosed with dementia versus 1.0 percent of those with diabetes alone, double the risk, Wayne Katon's team reports in Archives of General Psychiatry.
Vitamins
Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to High Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Among 411 obese children and 87 normal-weight ones, those with lower vitamin D levels showed greater insulin resistance, University of Texas researchers report. Lead author Micah Olson says the study could not prove a link between low vitamin D and type 2 diabetes.
Vitamins
Vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women boosts risk of type 1 diabetes in children
Comparing 109 Norwegian women whose children developed type 1 diabetes with 219 whose children did not, researchers found children of mothers with the lowest serum vitamin D in pregnancy were more than twice as likely to develop the disease.
Vitamins
Vitamin D may delay progression of clinical diabetes
John Cannell points to a Tufts double-blind randomized trial in which 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 a day had a major effect on insulin resistance. Its authors said vitamin D may have a role in delaying progression to clinical diabetes in adults at high risk of type 2.
Food
Processed red meat may boost diabetes risk in women
Among 66,118 French women followed from 1993 to 2007, those eating five or more servings of processed red meat a week were 30 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. A Harvard analysis put the excess at 51 percent for 50 grams of processed meat a day.
Chemical
Eating canned food can get you toxic bisphenol A
People who ate a serving of canned soup daily for five days had urinary BPA of 22 micrograms per liter, against 1 to 2 in those who did not - a rise of more than 1,200 percent. BPA lines metal cans and has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.
Minerals
Population-wide salt reduction may do more harm than good
A meta-analysis of 167 studies found a low-salt diet lowered blood pressure by 3.5 mmHg in people with hypertension and under 1 mmHg in others, while raising renin, aldosterone, adrenaline, noradrenaline, cholesterol and triglycerides.

How Is Diabetes Treated in Children?
Type 2 diabetes, once mainly an adult disease, is increasingly diagnosed in youths aged 10 to 19, and about one in six children and teens is obese. FDA endocrinologist Ilan Irony says treatment aims at keeping blood glucose in normal range, with no single approach working for everyone.
Food
Dietary fructose linked to metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus
Feeding 29 adult male rhesus monkeys a diet with 30% of energy from fructose for a year left all of them with metabolic syndrome features including insulin resistance, and four, or 15%, developed type 2 diabetes. The researchers note most Americans get under 25% of energy from fructose.
Diet
Mediterranean diet linked to lower risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus
Among 340,000 people in the EPIC study, with 11,994 cases of type 2 diabetes, high adherence to a Mediterranean diet came with 12% lower risk and medium adherence with 7%. The association was not significant in participants under 50 or those who were obese.
Food
Fish and shellfish lower risk of type 2 diabetes in women
Among 51,963 men and 64,193 women in Shanghai, eating fish, shellfish and long-chain omega-3 fats went with up to 20 percent lower type 2 diabetes risk in women. In men, only shellfish showed a significant link, at up to 34 percent lower risk.
