Following 22,921 men and 29,759 women in Japan for five years, researchers found men eating the most total fish and seafood were 27% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, rising to 32% for small and medium fish such as sardine and mackerel. No link appeared in women.

Got insulin resistance? Vitamin d supplements can help
In a six-month randomized trial of 81 South Asian women with insulin resistance, 4,000 IU of vitamin D a day raised average blood levels from 21 to 75 nmol/L and improved insulin sensitivity, with benefit maximized above 80 nmol/L. Insulin secretion was unaffected.
Diabetes
Processed, red meats linked to elevated risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus
Harvard researchers pooled data on more than 200,000 health professionals and found 100 grams of unprocessed red meat a day tracked with 19 percent higher type 2 diabetes risk, and 50 grams of processed meat with 51 percent higher. Swapping red meat for nuts or whole grains tracked with lower risk.
Food
High fructose corn syrup may boost risk of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease
Rats given sugary drinks for 56 days built up more abdominal fat, higher triglycerides and impaired insulin and glucose control than rats drinking water, despite similar body weight. Only the fructose-glucose group showed raised fasting glycaemia, a pre-diabetes sign.
Drug
Don't over-treat type 2 diabetes mellitus
A BMJ analysis of 13 trials covering 34,533 diabetes patients found intensive glucose lowering no better than standard treatment at preventing death overall or cardiovascular death. It cut non-fatal heart attacks 15% and microalbuminuria 10%, but more than doubled severe hypoglycemia.
Environment
Flame retardants boost diabetes mellitus risk
A study of 118 postmenopausal women who had worked at a capacitor manufacturer found their PCB exposure correlated significantly with a history of diabetes, though not with insulin resistance among those without the disease. Earlier Taiwanese work found a similar link.
Vitamins
Low serum potassium may boost diabetes risk
Following 2,716 African American and 9,493 white adults for nine years, researchers linked serum potassium below 4.0 mEq/L to a 128% higher diabetes risk in African Americans and 53% in whites. Whether potassium supplements would lower risk remains unknown.
Nutrition
High vitamin C, calcium may prevent diabetes
Among 232,007 people in the NIH-AARP study, vitamin C supplements tracked with 9 percent lower diabetes risk and calcium supplements with 15 percent lower. Multivitamins showed no link, and neither did vitamin E or other individual vitamins and minerals.
Diabetes
The fatty Mediterranean diet cuts diabetes risk
In a four-year trial of 418 Spanish adults aged 55 to 80, diabetes developed in 10.1% eating a Mediterranean diet with nuts and 11.0% with virgin olive oil, against 17.9% on a low-fat control diet, with no significant change in weight or physical activity.
Lifestyle
Weight loss, metabolism and the diabetes link
Columbia and Duke researchers compared severely obese diabetic patients who had weight loss surgery with those on strict diets. Both groups lost 20 pounds, but circulating amino acids tied to obesity and insulin resistance fell significantly only in the surgery patients.
Disease
Diabetics at higher risk for Parkinson's disease
Among 288,662 people in the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study, those with diabetes were 41 percent more likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, with most of the excess risk among people who had diabetes more than 10 years, a Diabetes Care study reports.

Does Your Family History Include Type 2 Diabetes?
Having a parent or grandparent with type 2 diabetes raises your own odds, and nearly 13% of African Americans over 20 have the disease. The piece cites the Diabetes Prevention Program's finding that it can be prevented or delayed, and points to NDEP's “More than 50 Ways” tip sheet.

Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes - CDC
CDC's 2011 fact sheet also counts 79 million adults with prediabetes. About 7 million people with diabetes do not know they have it, and the agency estimates as many as one in three U.S. adults could have the disease by 2050 if current trends hold.
Food
Diabetics benefit from safflower oil
In a 16-week crossover trial, 35 postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes who took eight grams of safflower oil daily had lower HbA1c and C-reactive protein, better insulin sensitivity and higher HDL. Conjugated linoleic acid did not move their metabolic measures.
Disease
Asian Americans battle genetics and diabetes
Diabetes Care reports diabetes among Asian Americans rose from just over 4 percent in 1997 to 8 percent in 2008, against 6 percent in white adults. In 230,500 adults surveyed, Asian background itself went with a 30 to 50 percent higher likelihood, adjusted for age, BMI, income and exercise.
Food
More evidence shows drinking coffee cut type 2 diabetes mellitus risk
Among 69,532 French women, drinking more than one cup of coffee a day was tied to 27% lower diabetes risk, an association found only in lunchtime drinkers. A separate UCLA study reported women drinking four cups daily had higher SHBG and were 56% less likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
Food
Here is why drinking coffee cuts type 2 diabetes risk
UCLA researchers report in Diabetes that coffee raises blood levels of sex hormone-binding globulin, a protein long thought to play a role in type 2 diabetes. In their data, women drinking more than four cups a day were over 50% less likely to develop the disease than non-drinkers.
Diet
Mediterranean diet may prevent diabetes, heart disease, depression
A New England Journal of Medicine trial found that patients with depression plus diabetes or heart disease did better under TEAMcare, in which a nurse tracked blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and mood alongside their doctors. At one year they were less depressed and better controlled.
