PCRM welcomes the USDA's new MyPlate icon for telling Americans plainly to fill half the plate with fruit and vegetables, but objects to its separate protein and dairy sections and argues that federal farm subsidies contradict the advice the plate gives.

Diet
Diet may be linked with Alzheimer's disease (PR)
A trial in Archives of Neurology compared a high-saturated-fat, high-glycemic diet with a low-fat, low-glycemic one in 20 healthy older adults and 29 with cognitive difficulty, and found the dietary change appeared to shift biomarkers associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Must read: Low carb, high protein diet may help fight cancer, CORRECTED
Mice fed a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet grew both mouse and human tumours more slowly than mice on a calorie-matched Western diet, and had lower blood glucose, insulin and lactate. The effect added to that of the drugs CCI-779 and Celebrex.

Want to reduce cancer risk? Eat like a mouse!
At North Carolina State, D.K. Carver's team fed laying hens either freely or at 45% of normal calories and saw a near five-fold drop in epithelial ovarian cancer. The restricted hens halved their mortality and ovulated 64% less often.

Eating Mediterranean diet may cut breast cancer risk
Premenopausal women who followed a Mediterranean diet most closely were 35 percent less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer over nine years, in a UK cohort of 33,731 women. No link appeared in postmenopausal women, nor for the WHO healthy diet index.
Diet
Low cal diet plus soy protein good for cholesterol
Fifty-two patients with hyperlipidemia followed a 1,400 kcal diet with 30 grams of soy protein daily for four weeks and ended with lower LDL and total cholesterol than controls. Everyone on the low-calorie diet lost weight and waist and hip circumference.
Diet
Vegan Diet Reduces Breast Cancer Risk
Among 308 women at high genetic risk of breast cancer, those with the highest IGF-I levels had 3.5 times the risk of those with the lowest, and BRCA1 or BRCA2 carriers with high IGF-I were seven times more likely to develop the disease. Larger studies would be needed to confirm it.
Diet
Is a ketogenic diet best for diabetics?
Mount Sinai researchers reported in PLoS ONE that eight weeks on a ketogenic diet reversed markers of diabetic kidney damage in mice with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, though the damage visible under the microscope reversed only partly.
Diet
Protein and calories can help severe traumatic brain injury (PR)
An Institute of Medicine report urges the Defense Department to give service members with severe traumatic brain injury enough protein and calories at once and through the first two weeks, the only nutrition step it found evidence to recommend. Choline, creatine, EPA, DHA and zinc need more study.
Diet
New link between mother's pregnancy diet and offspring's chances of obesity found (PR)
University of Southampton researchers report that a mother's diet during pregnancy can alter how her child's DNA functions. Epigenetic changes measured at birth in nearly 300 children predicted how fat they were at six or nine, independent of the mother's weight and birth weight.
Diet
Limiting carbs, not calories, reduces liver fat faster (PR)
UT Southwestern researchers put 18 people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease on either a low-carbohydrate or a low-calorie diet for 14 days and found cutting carbohydrates reduced liver fat faster. The low-carb group ate under 20 grams of carbohydrate a day in the first week.
Diet
Vegetarian diet helps prevent heart disease, diabetes and stroke
Vegetarians were 36 percent less likely to have metabolic syndrome than meat eaters in an analysis of more than 700 adults from Adventist Health Study 2, with lower triglycerides, blood sugar, blood pressure, waist size and BMI. Even semi-vegetarians had smaller waists and lower BMI.
Diet
Bitterness induces nausea, swallowing not required (PR)
Sixty-three volunteers held an intensely bitter but non-toxic solution in their mouths for three minutes, then spat it out. Most reported nausea, and electrodes recorded the irregular stomach activity that marks it. Sweet, salty and umami tastes produced no such effect.

Mediterranean Diet Improves Heart Risk Factors
A review of 35 clinical trials found that sticking with a Mediterranean diet modestly improved metabolic syndrome measures: waistlines shrank about 0.43 cm on average, systolic blood pressure fell 2.35 points and fasting blood sugar 3.89 mg/dL. Mercola notes there is no single Mediterranean diet.
Diet
Mediterranean diet helps prevent metabolic syndrome
A Greek meta-analysis of 50 studies covering 534,906 people found closer adherence to the Mediterranean diet linked to lower metabolic syndrome risk, along with smaller waists, higher HDL cholesterol, and lower triglycerides, blood pressure and glucose.
Diet
Americans Consume Too Much Sodium (Salt)
Most Americans eat more sodium than the 2,300 mg daily limit, largely from processed and restaurant food. Cutting back lowers blood pressure within days to weeks. People over 51, African Americans, and those with hypertension, diabetes or kidney disease should stay under 1,500 mg.
Diet
Homemade Baby Food – Make it Safely
An FDA policy analyst sets out steps for making baby food at home: start with good-quality fresh, frozen or canned ingredients; never use raw-milk dairy, honey, home-canned or outdated food; and wash hands, equipment and produce, keeping meat on separate cutting boards.
Diet
Western diet linked to breast cancer
PyMT mice fed a Western-style diet of 21.2% fat and 0.2% cholesterol developed twice as many tumours, 50% larger, as mice on a low-fat, cholesterol-free diet, and were likelier to have cancer spread to organs such as the lungs. Their blood cholesterol ran lower.
