Comparing 15,152 heart attack cases with 14,820 controls in 52 countries, INTERHEART researchers linked smoking, hypertension, diabetes, abdominal obesity and psychosocial factors to higher risk, and daily fruit and vegetables, alcohol and exercise to lower risk.

Risk factors for pertussis in older adults
Following 263,094 Australian adults over 45, researchers recorded 205 pertussis notifications and 12 hospitalizations. Obesity came with 52 percent higher odds of a notification and pre-existing asthma with 64 percent; hospitalization rates climbed with age.

Celiac disease may reduce risk for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer?
In a Swedish study of 17,852 biopsy-confirmed celiac patients and 88,400 controls, women with celiac disease were 15, 40 and 11 percent less likely to develop breast, endometrial and ovarian cancer. The authors suggest shared risk factors or early menopause may explain it.

Uric acid a new risk factor for heart disease, stroke
Among 10,840 patients who had recently had a heart attack, those in the highest fifth of uric acid were 63% more likely to die than those in the lowest, and uric acid also tracked with cardiovascular events. The authors call it a risk factor worth counting.
Disease
Reproductive factors linked to lung cancer risk
In a Singapore study of 702 Chinese women with lung cancer and 1,578 hospital controls, reproductive factors tracked with risk among never-smokers: menstrual cycles longer than 30 days were linked to 50 percent lower risk, and a first birth before 30 to 47 percent lower.

Breast cancer patients can die from other causes
Using Swedish registry data covering 3.68 million women, researchers found breast cancer patients were 51 percent more likely to die of diseases of pulmonary circulation, 39 percent more likely to die by suicide and 29 percent more likely to die of heart failure than women without the disease.
Disease
Psoriatic arthritis more often found in people with obesity
A study in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases reports that in the UK general population, overweight people were 17 percent and people with obesity 57 percent more likely to develop psoriatic arthritis than those with a normal BMI. Among 75,395 psoriasis patients, risk also rose with BMI.

West Nile virus hits Texas big time
Texas has recorded at least 510 neuroinvasive West Nile cases and 43 deaths this year, worse than the 439 cases and 40 deaths of 2003, against 1,069 neuroinvasive cases nationwide. An editor's note argues the deaths have been in people with compromised immunity.
Disease
Yosemite National Park: 8 cases, 3 deaths of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome reported
The National Park Service has confirmed hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in eight people who stayed at Curry Village in Yosemite since June 2012; three died and the rest are improving. The park is contacting Signature Tent Cabin guests. The U.S. strains do not spread person to person.

Weight loss boosts serum vitamin D in obese women
Among 383 overweight or obese women in a two-year weight-loss trial, those who lost 5 to 10 percent of their body weight raised serum 25(OH)D by about 2 ng/mL and those losing more than 10 percent by 5.0 ng/mL, against 1.9 ng/mL in women who lost no weight.
Disease
Female hormone boosts breast cancer risk - study confirms
In Denmark's Diet, Cancer and Health cohort, 348 postmenopausal breast cancer cases matched to controls showed modest increases in risk at higher serum estrogen levels, among both never-users and users of hormone therapy. Estrone tracked more consistently than estradiol; SHBG showed no link.
Disease
High Mammographic Breast Density not Linked to Risk of Breast Cancer Death
Among 9,232 women diagnosed with breast cancer and followed 6.6 years, high mammographic density was not linked to death from breast cancer or from any cause. The study was observational and could not establish cause; obese patients with low density did show higher death risk.

Breast Cancer News: Obesity Raises Breast Cancer Death Risk in Some Women
Pooled data from two NSABP prevention trials found premenopausal women who were overweight 59% more likely, and those with obesity 70% more likely, to develop invasive breast cancer than women with a normal BMI. The association did not hold after menopause.
Disease
Type 2 diabetes mellitus lowers breast cancer survival odds
Among 4,390 Taiwanese women with early-stage breast cancer, the 7.7 percent who also had type 2 diabetes had lower five-year survival: 85 versus 91 percent for breast cancer specifically and 79 versus 90 percent overall. Adjusted, their risk of shorter survival rose 53 and 71 percent.
Disease
Kidney Function Linked to Cardiovascular Disease in Kidney Transplantation Recipients
Among 3,676 kidney transplant recipients in the FAVORIT trial followed a median 3.8 years, each 5 mL/min/1.73 m2 higher eGFR below 45 was linked to 15% lower risk of cardiovascular events and death. Reduced kidney function, not preexisting conditions, drove the risk.
Disease
Depression lowers heart failure survival odds
A Psychosomatics study followed 985 heart failure patients at Duke for 12 years and found those with depression were 35 percent more likely to die. Deaths reached 80 percent among depressed patients against 73 percent of the rest, and survival fell as depression grew more severe.
Disease
23 Deaths in Dallas, Texas Linked to West Nile Virus Disease
Texas reported 23 deaths linked to West Nile virus as of Aug 23, 10 of them in Dallas County, while the CDC counted 41 nationally. A CDC study of 1,090 cases found chronic kidney disease, cancer history, alcohol abuse, diabetes and hypertension raised the odds of severe illness.
Disease
Inflammatory arthritis, diabetes mellitus linked to cardiovascular disease
Dutch researchers compared 1,518 people with inflammatory arthritis, 11,959 with diabetes and 4,004 with osteoarthritis against 158,439 controls. After adjustment, inflammatory arthritis carried 50 percent higher cardiovascular risk and diabetes 30 percent; osteoarthritis carried 20 percent lower.
