A meta-analysis of 41 studies found women with diabetes were 24 percent more likely and men 40 percent more likely to develop breast cancer than people without it. Type 2 diabetes carried a 22 percent higher risk; gestational and type 1 diabetes showed no association.

High blood sugar linked to high death risk in breast cancer patients
Among 265 patients with advanced breast cancer on palliative chemotherapy, those whose mean glucose ran 130 mg/dL or higher during treatment faced a higher risk of death, diabetic or not. The authors advise clinicians to monitor glucose levels during treatment.

Gut Bacteria Can Affect Fat Absorption, and Act in Accordance to “Social Structures”
A research team including Carnegie's Steve Farber and Juliana Carten reports that certain gut microbes increase absorption of dietary fats. The authors say diet-driven shifts in gut bacteria might therefore influence fat absorption and the body's energy balance.

Influenza Deaths: The Hype vs. the Evidence
Barbara Loe Fisher argues flu shot advice has widened from seniors and the chronically ill before 2000 to everyone over six months old, with health workers fired for refusing and Connecticut and New Jersey requiring it for daycare, while 1986 liability shields protect drug makers.
Disease
Chemotherapy raises risk of osteoporosis/fracture in breast cancer survivors
P. Taxel and colleagues warn in Maturitas that chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea and anti-estrogen drugs promote bone loss, so women with early stage breast cancer may face higher osteoporosis risk. They urge clinicians to make bone health part of survivorship care.
Disease
Obesity boosts gout risk
Following 6,263 women in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, researchers found gout incidence by age 70 climbed from 1.9 percent among those at a healthy weight to 7.9 percent with obesity and 11.8 percent with a BMI of 35 or more. Obesity at 25 tracked 2.8 times the risk.
Disease
Obesity linked to breast cancer
Among 82,971 women in the Multiethnic Cohort, obesity was linked to 82 percent higher breast cancer risk in Native Hawaiian women and 59 percent in Japanese women, against a BMI of 20 to 24.9. Adult weight gain tracked risk more strongly than BMI did.
Disease
Early menopause linked to heart attack, stroke
Among 2,509 women in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, the 693 who reported menopause at 46 or younger were twice as likely to suffer heart attack or stroke. Researcher Melissa Wellons stresses the study is observational and suggests treating age at menopause as a risk marker.
Disease
Weight loss normalizes blood pressure in obese or overweight people
A review in Obesity Research reports that weight gain in adulthood promotes hypertension while weight loss is the most effective non-drug way to lower blood pressure. Losing 5 to 10% of starting weight can normalize pressure in some patients and let others stop taking drugs.
Disease
Central obesity in middle age linked to Alzheimer's disease
Researchers followed 1,459 dementia-free New Yorkers aged 65 and older and recorded 145 Alzheimer's cases. Body mass index and waist circumference showed no link, but people in the highest quartile of waist-to-hip ratio were 150% more likely to develop the disease than those in the lowest.
Disease
Diabetes Linked to Higher Risk of Breast Cancer
A cohort study in Cancer Causes and Control that followed 52,657 women with diabetes and 30,210 without found postmenopausal women with diabetes had a 12 percent greater risk of breast cancer, and diabetes medications appeared to do nothing to lower that risk.
Disease
Obesity linked to osteoporosis
Surveying 4,202 women in Chengdu, researchers found age, hypertension, smoking, exercise and body mass index independently associated with osteoporosis, and concluded that in Southwest China obesity raises the risk of osteoporosis in women.
Disease
Breast cancer linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus
A British Journal of Cancer meta-analysis by P. Boyle found women with type 2 diabetes were 27 percent more likely to have breast cancer, falling to 16 percent once body mass index was taken into account. No increase appeared for type 1 diabetes or pre-menopausal women.
Disease
Obesity responsible for one third of coronary heart disease cases
Pooling data on about 119,000 men and women followed over 16 years, Harvard researchers found obese men twice as likely and obese women 2.5 times as likely to develop coronary heart disease as those of normal weight. Risk rose with BMI regardless of other conditions.
Disease
Obesity impairs sexual quality of life
A study in Obesity of more than 1,100 obese adults found higher BMI tracked with greater impairment of sexual quality of life. Women reported more impairment than men, and gastric bypass candidates more than residential patients and untreated controls.
Disease
Adolescent obesity/overweight boosts pancreatic cancer risk
Israeli researchers who measured BMI at ages 16 to 19 found adolescents who were overweight or obese were about twice as likely to develop pancreatic cancer later, based on 98 cases over a mean 23.3 years. They put 16% of Israeli cases down to adolescent weight.
Disease
Obesity linked to liver cancer, gallbladder cancer
Among 359,525 people in the EPIC study, those in the top third for waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratio were 2.5 times as likely to be diagnosed with liver cancer, and each one-unit rise in those ratios came with 56% higher odds of gallbladder cancer.
Disease
Type 2 diabetes boosts death risk from breast cancer
A case-control study of 52,657 women with type 2 diabetes and 30,210 without found those with breast cancer and diabetes were 40 percent more likely to die of any cause. Diabetes was tied to 29 percent higher breast cancer risk, falling to 12 percent after adjustment.
