Antibacterial soap exposes health workers to high triclosan levels
Urine from 38 doctors and nurses at each of two hospitals showed significantly higher triclosan levels where staff washed with soap containing 0.3% triclosan than where they used plain soap. Handwashing accounted for more exposure than triclosan toothpaste did.

Practice smart sun - Newsletter from EWG
EWG's late-summer sun advice: avoid burns, cover up with shirts, hats and pants, which the group calls the best protection from UV rays, and wear sunglasses to shield eyes from the radiation that causes cataracts. The newsletter also promotes EWG's Amazon sunscreen store.

Selenium reduces cell damages induced by cell phone radiation
A Turkish study reports that 900 MHz mobile phone radiation caused oxidative damage and affected cell viability in breast cancer cells, and that selenium supplements countered the radiation's effects on apoptosis and oxidative stress.

Mobile phones damage male fertility - updated
Sperm samples exposed to mobile phone radiation showed less progressive movement and more DNA fragmentation in a study of 35 healthy men. A separate meta-analysis of ten studies covering 1,492 semen samples found reduced sperm motility and viability but no effect on concentration.

Texas crop, weather for Aug. 12, 2014
Drought and low aquifer levels have left Texas Winter Garden growers short of irrigation water, and they are abandoning traditional August plantings such as cabbage, says AgriLife horticulturist Larry Stein: "Little showers aren't going to do it. We need a flood."

26 children tested - news from EWG
EWG and Duke University found a biomarker of the fire retardant TDCIPP in all 22 mothers and 26 children tested, with children averaging nearly five times their mothers' levels. EWG asks readers to petition the CPSC over furniture flammability standards.

Texas beef producers can apply for federal disaster aid due to drought
USDA Farm Service Agency officials told the Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course that $258 million in livestock disaster payments had gone out in Texas as of Aug. 6, and urged ranchers to book appointments at county offices before program deadlines arrive.

Breaking: New study by EWG and Duke finds toxic fire retardants in mothers – and even more in toddlers
EWG and Duke University scientists found a breakdown product of the cancer-causing fire retardant TDCIPP in all 22 mothers and 26 children tested, with children averaging nearly five times the mothers' levels. EWG lists steps for limiting exposure from furniture and baby products.

Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course attendees hear optimistic views on industry future
More than 1,500 producers attended Texas A&M's 60th Beef Cattle Short Course. With US cattle inventory the smallest since the 1950s, speakers expect strong prices to hold through slow herd rebuilding, though Bill Mies warned retail beef could price itself into treat territory.

Texas crop, weather for Aug. 5, 2014
A Texas A&M AgriLife report: High Plains cotton ran from the first to the third week of bloom in early August, and agronomist Mark Kelley says soil and crop conditions beat the past three years, though dryland fields that have missed rain for weeks need some soon.

Many Asking if Cage-free Eggs Are More Humane After Deathly Fire
A predawn fire killed 65,000 hens at an Egg Innovations barn in Kosciusko County, Indiana, reviving attention to a National Fire Protection Association proposal to require sprinklers in farm animal housing. Mercy for Animals used it to question humane labeling.

5 Things You Need to Know About Obama’s Clean Power Plant Rule
Carl Pope previews EPA's final hearing on its proposed rule to cut carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants, separating opposition from coal communities whose livelihoods are at risk from ideological and partisan objections, and argues broader power sector reform is needed.

Female has toothed organ to saw through fruit skin
Texas A&M AgriLife entomologist Erfan Vafaie warns growers about the spotted wing drosophila, whose saw-like ovipositor cuts into intact fruit to lay eggs. The larvae are harmless to eat, but the tears open fruit to other invaders. Berries, grapes, peaches and tomatoes are at risk.

High cattle prices, availability of replacement cows persist
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension economists report replacement cattle prices averaging 20 percent above a year ago, with young pairs and open cattle hard to find. Their FARM Assistance analysis used a 200-head South Texas herd to compare which replacement types return the most income.

Cell phones cause more than brain tumors
Rats exposed to 900 MHz cell phone radiation four hours a day for 15 days showed more anxiety and poorer learning than controls, alongside reduced antioxidant enzymes, increased lipid peroxidation and neurodegenerative cells in the hippocampus, a Neurological Research study reports.

Urgent: Take action for safer sunscreen
EWG urges readers to back the Sunscreen Innovation Act, which would set deadlines for FDA reviews of new sunscreen ingredients. Six already sold in Europe have waited over eight years, and EWG estimates half of the 462 US sunscreens it assessed would be too weak for Europe.
