A Medical College of Georgia study found black tea can carry up to 9 milligrams of fluoride per litre, nearly double the earlier estimate of 1 to 5. Four patients with advanced skeletal fluorosis had each drunk one to two gallons of tea daily for 10 to 30 years.

FAN Bulletin 2018: Mercola-Connett Interview; and the US EPA
The Fluoride Action Network releases a five-part video interview with Joe Mercola, who plans to make ending water fluoridation a priority, and faults the EPA for publishing nothing in over four years toward a new drinking-water fluoride standard.

FAN objects to mischaracterization of fluoridation opponents
In a letter to readers, a fluoridation opponent argues that painting opponents as right-wing conspiracy theorists deflects attention from what he calls weak science behind fluoridation, and faults commentators including Rachel Maddow for using a Nevada candidate's opposition to ridicule her.
Politics
Limit Fluoride to Prevent Lead Poisoning, researchers say (PR)
Sawan and colleagues report that rats given fluosilicic acid in drinking water took up more lead into tooth enamel, bone and dentine, and warn that fluoride exposure at ages one to three may push children's blood lead levels higher.

Study Links Fluoride to Premature Births (press release)
A news release on SUNY research presented to the American Public Health Association: using 1993-2002 New York hospital data and adjusting for age, race, poverty, hypertension and diabetes, the researchers tied water fluoridation to higher preterm birth risk, most so among the poorest women.
Chemical
Low-Level Fluoride Linked to Sperm Damage in Animals
Two 2007 animal studies tested water fluoride at 1 to 10 ppm, low levels for rodents. Reddy's team linked 4.5 ppm to reduced sperm count, viability and testicular enzyme activity; Dvorakova-Hortova's found 10 ppm impaired sperm capacitation, with no effect at 1 ppm unless aluminum was added.

Fluoride fuss alive and well
CDC ranks water fluoridation among the 20th century's top 10 public health achievements, while the Fluoride Action Network and more than 2,000 signatories call EPA's 4 parts per million standard unsafe, citing a 2006 National Research Council review of possible adverse effects.
Chemical
Cancer-causing toxins detected in fluoride chemicals
CDC data show arsenic in 43 percent of 245 water fluoridation chemical samples taken from 2000 to 2006, copper in 3 percent, lead in 2 percent, and barium, chromium, mercury, selenium or thallium in under 1 percent. The EPA sets its arsenic goal for water at zero.
