Fish Oil May Not Cut Postpartum Depression Risk
In a trial of 2,389 pregnant women, 800 mg of DHA daily through the second half of pregnancy did not significantly reduce postpartum depressive symptoms, and children's cognitive and language scores at 18 months matched controls.

Vegetables help cut risk of breast cancer - study
Following 52,000 women in the Black Women's Health Study for 12 years, researchers found no overall link between fruit and vegetable intake and breast cancer, but women eating two or more vegetable servings a day had 43 percent lower risk of ER-negative, PR-negative tumors.

Vitamin D helps prevent breast cancer recurrence, death - new study
Among 512 women with early breast cancer followed an average of 11.6 years, those deficient in vitamin D were 94 percent more likely to see a distant recurrence and 73 percent more likely to die than women with sufficient levels; after adjustment the gaps narrowed to 71 and 60 percent but held.

Pictsweet Recalls Green Peas - A Great Healthy Food
Pictsweet recalled certain lots of store-brand frozen green peas sold to Kroger stores in the Southeast and Wal-Mart nationwide over possible glass fragments. The piece then runs through the nutrients green peas supply, led by vitamin K, manganese, vitamin C and fiber.
Diet
Healthy diet helps memory, protects against disease
Forty-four overweight adults aged 50 to 75 spent four weeks on an anti-inflammatory diet of oily fish, barley, soy protein, blueberries, almonds, cinnamon and vinegar. LDL cholesterol fell 33 percent, blood lipids 14 percent, blood pressure 8 percent and a clotting marker 26 percent.

HIV carriers at risk of vitamin D deficiency
Blood samples from 115 Danish men with HIV showed 20 percent vitamin D deficient and 4 percent severely deficient, with another 27 percent insufficient. Levels were not linked to age, years infected, antiretroviral therapy or CD4 count.
Supplements
When Never EVER to Use Fish Oil (video)
Drug industry insider Rudi Moerck argues in a video interview with Dr. Mercola that fish oil may not be the best source of omega-3 fats, while Mercola notes that most research on the benefits of EPA and DHA still rests on fish oil studies.

Could Coenzyme Q10 boost breast cancer risk?
In a case-control study of 160 postmenopausal women with breast cancer and 289 matched controls, those with the highest plasma coenzyme Q10 were more than twice as likely to be diagnosed. The authors caution that high levels may reflect supplement use rather than cause the risk.
Diet
Mediterranean diet cuts risk of diabetes
Among 418 non-diabetic adults at high cardiovascular risk, four years on a Mediterranean diet with olive oil or with nuts brought about half the diabetes risk of a low-fat diet: 10.1% and 11.0% developed diabetes against 17.9% of controls, with no calorie restriction.

If You Eat These Eggs, You are Being Ripped Off
The Cornucopia Institute visited over 15% of US certified egg farms and reports that most large 'organic' operations give hens no real outdoor access, counting small roofed porches as the outdoors, sometimes 3 to 5 percent of the henhouse floor area.
Diet
Mediterranean diet linked to lower risk of breast cancer
Among 14,807 Greek women followed nearly nine years, diets scoring 2 points closer to the traditional Mediterranean pattern carried 12 percent lower breast cancer risk overall, which the researchers called not significant, and 22 percent lower risk after menopause. Younger women saw no benefit.

Half a Teaspoon of This Each Day Can Optimize Cholesterol Levels...
In a 12-week London study of 58 poorly controlled type 2 diabetics, 2 grams of cinnamon a day significantly lowered HbA1c and both blood pressure readings. Separately, people with the highest magnesium intake were almost 50 percent less likely to develop diabetes over 20 years.

Green tea extract fights chronic lymphocytic leukemia
In a phase II trial, 42 untreated patients with early-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia took 2,000 mg of EGCG twice daily for six months. Nearly a third sustained a drop of more than 20% in lymphocyte count, and two thirds with palpable adenopathy saw nodes shrink by half.

Multivitamin use cuts risk of heart attack
In a Swedish cohort of 31,671 women with no history of cardiovascular disease, followed 10.2 years, multivitamin users were 27 percent less likely to have a heart attack, and users of five years or more 41 percent less likely. The authors stress the findings are observational.
Vitamins
B-vitamins may prevent lung cancer
In the EPIC cohort of about 520,000 people followed at least six years, those with the highest serum vitamin B6 and methionine were 56 and 48 percent less likely to develop lung cancer than those with the lowest. Having both above average was tied to 59 percent lower risk.

Having a child early cuts breast cancer risk
In the European Journal of Gynecology and Oncology, women who gave birth first at 25 or younger and had three or more pregnancies had 50 percent lower breast cancer risk than women who never gave birth. A Cyprus study found 46 percent lower risk with menarche after age 15.

Vitamin D protects against Parkinson disease
Among 3,173 Finnish adults followed 29 years, those with serum vitamin D in the highest quartile were 67 percent less likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson disease, after adjustment for factors including smoking, BMI and activity. The study is observational and shows no causal link.
