Fish oil may reduce risk of breast cancer
Among 35,016 postmenopausal women followed six years, those who regularly used fish oil supplements were 32 percent less likely to develop breast cancer, particularly invasive ductal disease. The authors caution this is an association; a healthier lifestyle among users could explain it.

Salt Institute: New dietary guidelines on sodium will increase obesity and health risks for Americans (PR)
The Salt Institute told the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee that a 1,500 mg sodium target will confuse consumers and push them to eat more, fueling obesity. Morton Satin argued the review reflects activist ideology and that no modern society consumes so little salt.

McDonald's Happy Meal to Blame?
CSPI has filed notice that it may sue McDonald's over the toys in kids' meals, and CEO Jim Skinner has vowed to defend the Happy Meal. The piece quotes Marion Nestle that the marketing undermines parental responsibility, then asks who is really responsible.

Glucosamine doesn't help chronic low-back pain - study
In a trial of 250 patients with chronic low back pain and degenerative lumbar osteoarthritis, 1,500 mg of glucosamine daily for six months brought no statistically significant advantage over placebo on disability, pain or quality of life at six months or at one year.

US Sees Decline in Cancer Death Rates
The American Cancer Society says cancer death rates fell about 2 percent a year among men and 1.5 percent among women from 2001 to 2006, crediting smoking cessation, better treatment and earlier detection. Lung cancer remains the leading cancer killer for both sexes.
Diet
Your Diet Could be More Important Than Your Genes
Researchers gave food frequency questionnaires to 276 middle-aged male twins and linked a Mediterranean-style diet to higher heart rate variability, a measure whose low values signal coronary artery disease risk. Studying twins let them control for genetic and family influences.

Popular Brew May Lower Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, and Triglycerides
Research cited here finds tea rehydrates as well as water rather than dehydrating, and links one to eight cups a day to lower chronic disease risk, credited to flavonoids. Mercola still wants most daily fluid to be pure water, with no added sugar or pasteurized milk.

Does Depression Cause Alzheimer's Disease? Vitamin D Helps Both!
A Neurology study of 949 Framingham participants found 22 percent of those depressed at the start developed dementia over 17 years, against about 17 percent of the rest. Author Jane Saczynski says the data cannot show whether depression causes dementia or the reverse.

High intake of fructose may raise blood pressure
Analysing sugar intake among more than 4,500 adults, Colorado researchers found people eating 74 grams or more of fructose a day had 26% to 77% higher odds of elevated blood pressure, depending on the cutoff. The study could not separate the effects of fructose and glucose.

High Doses of vitamin D result in lower blood pressure
In a small trial, type 2 diabetes patients given a single 100,000 or 200,000 IU dose of vitamin D3 showed moderately lower systolic blood pressure at eight weeks than those on placebo. Endothelial function, insulin resistance and HbA1c did not differ between groups.

Genes help centenarians, healthy diet helps you to live longer
A Boston Medical Center study of more than 1,000 centenarians identified about 150 gene variants that a model used to predict living past 100 with up to 77 percent accuracy. The NIA's Winifred Rossi notes lifespan also depends on environment. The piece then reviews caloric-restriction research.

Canada Virtually Eliminates Flu Deaths While U.S. Has Thousands
Over four years Canada recorded 16 flu-associated deaths among under-18s against 553 in the same US age group, a per-capita rate 3.2 times higher in the US. Mercola also cites research linking vitamin D levels of 38 ng/ml or more to fewer viral respiratory infections.

This Fat Can Actually Protect Against Hearing Loss
A new study links high omega-3 intake to a lower risk of age-related hearing loss after 50, with people eating at least two servings of fish a week showing 42 percent lower risk than those eating less than one. Mercola calls the results preliminary.

Can This Popular Alternative Sweetener Spike Uric Acid into the Danger Zone?
Dr. Mercola argues that most agave is worse than high-fructose corn syrup and defends his earlier report against industry criticism, saying he sells no competing sweetener. He suggests stevia, small amounts of xylitol, or dextrose, and had three agave products independently tested.

Nutrients protective against AMD
A study of 4,000 adults aged 55 to 80 found vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin and the omega-3 fats DHA and EPA protective against age-related macular degeneration when paired with a low-glycemic-index diet that releases glucose slowly.
