New results from the Polyp Prevention Trial show that the participants who adhered most closely to a low-fat, high-fiber, high-produce diet cut their odds of polyp recurrence by up to 35 percent and of advanced polyp recurrence by nearly 50 percent. The trial enrolled 1,905 people.

New staph vacation spot: Beaches
University of Washington microbiologists sampled Puget Sound beaches and found staph bacteria at nine of ten and MRSA at five. Once confined to hospitals, MRSA has spread into gyms and locker rooms; the expensive antibiotic vancomycin remains the main treatment.
Food
Foods high in fiber
Adults should get 30 to 40 grams of fiber a day, but most Americans get about 10. The piece separates insoluble fiber, which bulks stool and speeds waste through the colon, from soluble fiber, which softens stool and carries cholesterol out, and lists foods high in each.

Do phytosterol reduce risk of heart disease? and more!
An AICR Q&A: 2 grams of phytosterols a day can lower LDL cholesterol about 10 percent in people with high cholesterol, though reaching that usually takes fortified products, and there is no known benefit at healthy levels. The writer knows of no research tying whey to prostate cancer.

Elderberry fruit extract may help fight H1N1 flu
In lab tests, an elderberry fruit extract blocked H1N1 infection at an IC50 of 252 micrograms/mL, with its flavonoids binding directly to virions. Two compounds the researchers synthesised inhibited the virus at concentrations they call comparable to Tamiflu and amantadine.

Vitamin C helps protect your skin (press release)
University of Leicester researchers found that a vitamin C derivative, ascorbic acid 2-phosphate, protected human dermal fibroblasts from DNA damage and promoted wound healing, adding mechanistic support to their earlier finding that DNA repair rises in people taking vitamin C.

Study reveals new role of vitamin C in skin protection (press release)
University of Leicester and Portuguese researchers found that a vitamin C derivative, ascorbic acid 2-phosphate, promoted wound healing and protected the DNA of human skin cells in culture, building on the group's earlier evidence that vitamin C supplements upregulate DNA repair.
Food
Fruit, vegetables better cognitive performance
A German study of 193 people aged 45 to 102 found those eating more fruit and vegetables each day scored higher on cognitive tests and carried more antioxidants in their blood.

Probiotics Protect You from Gut Parasites
Scientists studying Toxoplasma gondii found gut bacteria help stimulate the body's defenses against the parasite. Mercola adds that probiotics occupy space in the intestine and may keep disease-causing bacteria and parasites from attaching to the intestinal wall.

Vitamin D and H1N1 Swine Flu *****
Dr. John Cannell's newsletter argues that adequate vitamin D strengthens innate immunity by prompting hundreds of antibacterial peptides, and that the 36 U.S. children who had died of swine flu were much more likely to be vitamin D deficient, a pattern he says the CDC missed in its own data.

IV Vitamin C Used to Recover Terminal Swine Flu Case
Mercola relays Thomas Levy's account of a New Zealand farmer with swine flu and undiagnosed leukemia who was on life support until his family pressed the hospital to give intravenous vitamin C. The hospital agreed reluctantly, and the patient began improving two days later.
Food
Keeping Kids Flu Free: The Importance of Healthy Foods
Veteran parents offer tactics for feeding children well through flu season: plan menus ahead, aim for a balanced week rather than a balanced day, treat the effort as a marathon, and hide shredded zucchini or carrots in sauces if you must.
Food
The Best Foods to Improve Your Immunity
Dr. Mercola lists foods he credits with supporting immunity and the compound behind each: live-culture yogurt, L-theanine in green tea, vitamin C in oranges and bell peppers, sulfur compounds in garlic and broccoli, beta carotene in carrots, beta glucans in mushrooms and barley.

Eating garlic may help prevent Alzheimer's
A study by 80 scientists in Nature Genetics identified two more genes tied to Alzheimer's, clusterin on chromosome 8 and PICALM on chromosome 11. The piece pairs it with a 2009 in-vitro study in which garlic extract inhibited beta-amyloid fibril formation and broke up preformed fibrils.
Diet
Dietary fiber cuts breast cancer risk in older women
In an NIH-AARP study of 185,598 postmenopausal women followed for seven years, those with the highest dietary fiber intakes were 13 percent less likely to develop breast cancer. The researchers suggest fiber may act by changing how the body handles estrogen.

Vitamin D: What you need to know
A primer on vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, which the skin makes in sunlight and the body converts into the hormone calcitriol, said to affect some 2,000 genes. It recommends the 25-hydroxyvitamin D blood test and cites the Vitamin D Council's threshold of 50 for deficiency.
Supplements
Anticancer compound found in American mayapple (press release)
American mayapple, a common weed, may supply podophyllotoxin now taken from the near-extinct Indian mayapple and used to make the cancer drugs etoposide, teniposide and etopophos. Mississippi researchers set out to find American plants richest in the compound.

Genetic mutations raise Alzheimer's risk, healthy lifestyle cuts the risk
Scanning more than 600,000 DNA markers in over 19,000 older Europeans and Americans, 7,000 of them with Alzheimer's, an international team tied two more genes to the disease: clusterin on chromosome 8 and PICALM on chromosome 11. Their effects look smaller than APOE4's.
