A case report describes a 57-year-old woman in Puerto Rico who recovered from Zika infection after three days of intravenous vitamin C, against a typical two weeks. It rests on a single patient, and the authors suggest the treatment may help other viral infections.

Dietary folate lowers gastric cancer
A South Korean case-control study in Cancer Research found people with high dietary folate intake were 30 percent less likely to be diagnosed with gastric cancer than those with low intake, with the protection strongest among carriers of certain gene variants.
Diet
High methionine diet promotes cancer growth
A review in Cancer Treatment Reviews suggests the amino acid methionine may partly explain why high-protein, animal-heavy diets promote cancer growth. The authors say methionine-restricted diets have curbed cancer growth in animals and humans, and note vegan diets tend to be low in it.
Diet
Ketogenic diet inhibits metastatic cancer
A 2013 PLOS One study found mice with metastatic cancer fed a ketogenic diet survived 57% longer than mice on a normal diet, and 78% longer when the diet was combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen alone did not slow the cancer.
Food
Eating too much fries raises endometrial, ovarian cancer
A Dutch study followed 62,573 women aged 55 to 69 for 11.3 years and found non-smokers with the highest acrylamide intake were 29 percent likelier to develop endometrial cancer and 78 percent likelier to develop ovarian cancer. It is observational and proves no cause.
Food
Eating fruits prevents hypertension
In 128 adults aged 65 to 80, eating added sugar was associated with higher mean arterial and systolic blood pressure, while eating solid fruit, though not fruit juice, was associated with lower mean arterial, systolic and diastolic pressure.
Food
Foods and blood pressure
A survey of 876 residents of an island county in China found salt and meat consumption rose in step with both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while eating marine products was inversely associated with systolic pressure.
Food
Buckwheat fights hypertension
Rats fed a diet with 8 percent salt developed higher blood pressure, but adding Tartary or common buckwheat largely prevented the rise, reduced oxidative damage and improved Na+/K+-ATPase activity. The salt level used far exceeds what people normally eat.
Food
Dietary factors and cancer
An overview of dietary mutagens and antimutagens, advising less processed meat and meat cooked hot and long, no moldy peanuts, corn or grain, less saturated, omega-6 and trans fat, less alcohol and added sugar, and more foods that detoxify carcinogens.
Supplements
Omega 3 fatty acids fight breast cancer
In a 1993 study, mice carrying human breast cancer cells ate diets with rising proportions of menhaden fish oil in place of corn oil. Tumors grew fastest and spread to the lungs most on the highest corn oil diet, suggesting omega-3s may suppress growth and spread while omega-6s promote it.
Diet
High salt, high sugar diet easy to induce hypertension
Rats fed 4% salt plus 20% fructose saw systolic pressure climb from 125 to 140 mmHg within a week, while rats on high salt or high fructose alone stayed near 122. The combination diet also raised urinary 8-isoprostane, a marker of oxidative stress, and increased salt retention.
Diet
Trans fat, omega 6 fat linked to breast cancer
In the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort, high saturated fatty acids in plasma phospholipids were associated with 64% higher breast cancer risk, while omega-6 and trans fatty acids tracked with ER-negative/PR-negative tumours. Women with the most DPA, DHA and EPA were 43% less likely to be diagnosed.
Diet
Low-fat dietary pattern cuts risk of death from breast cancer
A Women's Health Initiative analysis presented at AACR 2016 reports that a low-fat diet with more fruits, vegetables and grain products cut deaths from all causes and from breast cancer and raised 10-year survival among 48,835 postmenopausal women.
Diet
Chinese foods, Mexican foods, vegetarian diet lower risk of cancer death
In the REGARDS cohort, a convenience diet of Chinese, Mexican, pasta and pizza dishes or a vegetarian diet was tied to roughly 20 percent lower cancer death risk. A southern diet of fried food, added fat, organ meat and sweet drinks raised it over 100 percent in African Americans.
Supplements
Bromelain and N-acetylcysteine help gastric cancer?
A bare citation to a 2014 Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research paper by Amini, Masoumi-Moghaddam and colleagues on bromelain and N-acetylcysteine inhibiting gastrointestinal cancer cell proliferation and survival in vitro.
Phytochemicals
Lycopene, beta-carotene fight breast cancer?
A short citation-led note on a 2014 Anticancer Research paper reporting that lycopene and beta-carotene induced cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis in human breast cancer cell lines, with background on the foods that contain the two pigments.
Supplements
Could aged black garlic extract prevent colon cancer?
A citation for a 2014 Biomedical Reports paper reporting that aged black garlic extract inhibited the growth of HT29 colon cancer cells through the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.
Herbs
Ursolic acid may help fight cancer
A pointer to two 2013 papers reporting that ursolic acid kills cancer cells by inducing autophagy, one in apoptosis-resistant colorectal cancer cells. The compound occurs in apple peel, berries and herbs such as rosemary and thyme, and is sold as a dietary supplement.
