Researchers measured vitamin D in 237 healthy children aged 8 to 18 and found most were deficient. Black and white children with deficiency both carried more fat, but black children tended to store it just under the skin and white children between the internal organs.

Vitamins
Obese adolescents lacking vitamin D (PR)
A Hasbro Children's Hospital study in the Journal of Adolescent Health found most obese adolescents lack vitamin D. The researchers call for closer surveillance of vitamin D in this group and further work on whether normalizing levels lowers obesity-related health risks.
Lifestyle
Obese teens and risky behavior
Using the 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, researchers compared 410 extremely obese high school students with 8,669 of healthy weight. Most risk behaviors ran at similar rates, but obese students more often reported trying cigarettes and, among girls, drinking before sex.
Drug
Obesity Surgery Even Worse than Previously Thought
Ten years after laparoscopic gastric banding, nearly half of patients had the band removed for complications, the band eroded in almost a third, and 60 percent had further weight-loss surgery. A separate study found bone mineral content fell 7.4 percent in 61 obese teens two years after bypass.
Obesity
The Controversial Trick for Blasting Away Up to a Pound of Flab a Day
hCG injections paired with a near-starvation diet still sell on promises of about a pound of loss a day, though the NY Times reports scant evidence they work. The FDA warned in January that homeopathic hCG lozenges and sprays sold online are fraudulent and illegal when they claim weight-loss powers.
Lifestyle
Childhood obesity issues linger into adulthood
A study in the New England Journal of Medicine followed 37,674 healthy Israeli army teens for a mean 17.4 years. Higher adolescent BMI, even within the normal range, predicted diabetes and coronary heart disease; adjusting for adult BMI erased the diabetes link but not the heart one.
Lifestyle
Obesity linked to higher risk of breast cancer
Among 155,723 Women's Health Initiative participants, those with the highest body mass index were 35% more likely to develop triple-negative and 39% more likely to develop estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer, while the most active women had lower risk of both.
Lifestyle
Walking, weight loss increase older, obese people's mobility
Wake Forest researchers split 288 adults aged 60 to 79 into physical activity and activity-plus-weight-loss groups and followed them 18 months. Measured by a 400-meter walk, mobility improved 5 percent on average and by as much as 20 percent.
Obesity
Use breakfast to fight obesity
A Nutrition study of more than 300 people who logged what they ate found they consumed the same calories at lunch and dinner regardless of breakfast size, so a larger breakfast simply added to the day's total. The authors suggest wiser breakfast choices could help cut daily intake.
Obesity
Fighting childhood obesity one hot lunch at a time
USDA proposed the first update to school meal standards in 15 years, capping calories, limiting french fries and salt and adding fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat milk for nearly 32 million children. CSPI's Margo Wootan calls it an enormous improvement.
Lifestyle
Here is why obesity boosts death risk from swine flu
About half of Californians aged 20 and older who died or landed in hospital with swine flu in 2009 were obese, researchers report, with obesity and extreme obesity carrying 200 and 300 percent higher death risk. Separate work points to missing flu-specific memory T cells in obese individuals.
Obesity
A third of 9-month-olds obese or at risk of obesity - study
Researchers who weighed 8,900 U.S. infants born in 2001 found about a third were obese or at risk of obesity at nine months, rising to 34.3 percent by age two. Hispanic and low-socioeconomic-status children faced higher risk; girls and Asian/Pacific Islanders lower.
Obesity
The skinny on diabetes and dairy fats
A study of 3,736 adults aged 65 and older in the Annals of Internal Medicine found people reporting more whole-fat dairy had higher blood trans-palmitoleate three years later, and those with higher levels showed better cholesterol markers and were less likely to have developed diabetes.
Diet
Healthy diet helps memory, protects against disease
Forty-four overweight adults aged 50 to 75 spent four weeks on an anti-inflammatory diet of oily fish, barley, soy protein, blueberries, almonds, cinnamon and vinegar. LDL cholesterol fell 33 percent, blood lipids 14 percent, blood pressure 8 percent and a clotting marker 26 percent.

Could weight loss help migraine headache?
The FDA approved Botox for chronic migraine, though a phase 3 trial found patients on it went headache-free 9 of 28 days versus 6.7 on placebo. Studies tying obesity to migraine suggest losing weight may also help manage the condition.
Food
Weight loss pill Meridia is gone; now's the time to drink green tea
The FDA asked Abbott to withdraw the weight loss drug Meridia after the SCOUT trial found users lost 1.7 kg over 3.4 years while heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death risk rose 14%. The piece offers green tea as one alternative, noting the trials are not all consistent.
Obesity
Obesity Leads to Rise in Arthritis
The CDC reports almost 50 million US adults had doctor-diagnosed arthritis during 2007-2009, up from about 46 million in 2003-2005, with 21.1 million reporting activity limits. Report authors expect an aging population and high obesity rates to push the numbers higher over 20 years.
Obesity
Thigh Fat Offers Health Perks
Mayo Clinic endocrinologist Michael Jensen had mostly twentysomething volunteers overeat for eight weeks; they gained 5.5 pounds in the upper body and 3.3 below. Those who gained in the thighs grew new fat cells, which Jensen says keep fat out of muscles and organs; abdominal gain added none.
