Mercola argues weight says little about health, since people can lose muscle and gain fat without the scale moving, and points to insulin and leptin resistance as the main drivers. He suggests keeping fructose under 25 grams a day, or 15 for those already unwell.

Fructose raises risk for kidney disease, hypertension
Reviewing 62 studies, Polish researchers conclude excess fructose may contribute to fatty liver, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension and kidney disease. They note fruit brings antioxidants, vitamin C, polyphenols, potassium and fiber that may counter the effect.

Abnormal activation of a protein may explain deadly link between high salt intake and obesity
University of Tokyo researchers fed obese salt-sensitive rats a high-salt diet and found the protein Rac1 activating the mineralocorticoid receptor in kidney cells, a job normally done by aldosterone. That drove salt reabsorption, fluid retention and high blood pressure.
Obesity
This Group Shed 10 Pounds in 45 Days - by Ignoring Conventional Wisdom
A radio interview with Gary Taubes accompanies Johns Hopkins research in which low-carb, high-fat dieters lost 10 pounds in 45 days while low-fat dieters needed 70 days to lose the same amount.
Disease
Low income linked to higher risk of obesity in young children
A Diabetes Care analysis of 1999-2008 NHANES data found 20 percent of boys aged 6 to 11 in the lowest income tertile were obese against 13 percent in the highest, with similar gaps for central obesity and among girls aged 12 to 17. Other cardiovascular risk factors showed little income gap.
Obesity
Adult obesity rates may almost double in the U.S. by 2030
A Lancet modeling study projects 65 million more obese US adults by 2030 — half of men and 45 to 52 percent of women — bringing 7.8 million more diabetes cases, 6.8 million more heart disease and stroke cases, and $48 to $66 billion more in yearly costs.
Herbs
Black tea extract prevents obesity
Female mice given Pu-erh black tea extract or gallic acid for 12 weeks gained significantly less weight, and both inhibited pancreatic lipase. Based on the mouse results, the researchers suggest 5 to 10 grams of the extract a day for people, especially those eating a high-fat diet.
Obesity
Known as the "Deadliest Nutrient" - but There's No Meaningful Evidence
Mercola interviews science journalist Gary Taubes, author of Good Calories, Bad Calories and Why We Get Fat, about the research behind his books and his argument that advice to eat less fat and more carbohydrates may have driven rising US obesity.
Obesity
Smaller plates lead to greater weight loss
Cornell psychologist Brian Wansink told the American Psychological Association that container size drives intake: extra-large buckets led moviegoers to eat 45% more fresh popcorn, and short wide glasses held 37% more liquid. He advises using salad plates and not waiting to feel full.
Disease
New link found between obesity and insulin resistance (pr)
Joslin Diabetes Center scientists examined livers from obese people and found lower levels of proteins that regulate RNA splicing. That shift changes the function of other proteins and drives excess liver fat, a major contributor to insulin resistance. The work appears in Cell Metabolism.

The Amazing Oil That Trims Women's Waistlines
In a trial of 40 women following a reduced-calorie diet and daily walks, only the group supplementing with coconut oil showed a reduction in waist circumference. The soybean oil group saw total cholesterol and LDL rise while HDL fell; the coconut oil group did not.
Obesity
Fat substitutes linked to weight gain (PR)
Purdue researchers report in Behavioral Neuroscience that rats on a high-fat diet given both regular Pringles and olestra-made Pringles Light ate more, gained more weight and built more fatty tissue than rats fed only the high-calorie chips, and kept the weight after the chips stopped.
Obesity
'Good Gut Bacteria' May Help Fight Obesity
Rats fed a lactic acid bacterium from before birth into adulthood put on significantly less weight than rats eating a similar diet, and had less low-level inflammation. Dr. Mercola adds that fermented foods such as kefir, natto and pickled vegetables carry the same bacteria.
Obesity
This Common Food Additive Now Linked to Weight Gain
Researchers followed more than 10,000 Chinese adults for about 5.5 years and found those eating the most MSG, a median of 5 grams a day, were roughly 30 percent more likely to become overweight. The link held after accounting for total calories eaten.

Who says fructose promotes obesity?
In a six-week Mexican trial of 131 obese patients, both energy-restricted diets produced significant weight loss, but the one with 50 to 70 grams of natural fructose a day led to more of it: 4.19 pounds against 2.83 pounds on the low-fructose diet.
Disease
Overweight, obesity linked to higher death risk
Following 6,603 Taiwanese adults aged 20 to 65 for 24 years, researchers found a BMI of 25 to 26.9 carried a 28 percent higher risk of death and a BMI of 27 or above a 46 percent higher risk, with the steepest increases in deaths from diabetes.
Disease
Arthritis as a Potential Barrier to Physical Activity
CDC's analysis of 2007 and 2009 BRFSS data found arthritis affected 35.6 percent of adults with obesity, and that those with both were 44 percent more likely to be physically inactive than obese adults without arthritis, after adjusting for age, sex, race and education.
Disease
Obesity and arthritis link
CDC data from 2003 to 2009 show obesity was 54 percent more common among adults with arthritis than among those without, with state rates running from 26.9 percent in Colorado to 43.5 percent in Louisiana. Either condition can limit the activity that helps manage both.
