Dietary supplement lowers bad cholesterol
In a 16-week double-blind trial, 39 adults with moderate hypercholesterolemia took a supplement combining red yeast rice, sugar-cane policosanols and artichoke leaf extract or a placebo. LDL cholesterol fell 21.4% and triacylglycerols 14.1% from baseline.

Testosterone supplements may help heart failure patients - clinical trials
A review of four trials covering 198 heart failure patients averaging 67 years found testosterone supplementation improved 6-minute walk distance by 54 meters and peak oxygen consumption by 2.70 ml/kg per minute, with no significant adverse cardiovascular events.

Functional dairy protein supplements for athletes
A review in the Australian Journal of Dairy Technology argues milk and whey protein supplements help elite athletes hold muscle mass and perform well. It covers the higher protein needs of people who train, the timing of supplements, and why not all proteins work equally.

Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761® helps dementia - clinical trial confirms
In a 24-week randomized trial of 410 outpatients with mild to moderate dementia, 240 mg daily of the Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761 improved SKT cognitive scores by 2.2 points against 0.3 on placebo, and neuropsychiatric scores by 4.6 against 2.1.

Isoflavone supplements prevent postmenopausal breast cancer
An Ontario case-control study of 3,101 breast cancer cases and 3,471 controls found women who ever used isoflavone supplements had about 25% lower risk, with the largest reductions among those taking high doses of three or more types for over five years. The link held only after menopause.
Supplements
Branched-chain amino acids help hepatocellular carcinoma patients
In a trial of 56 patients, those given branched-chain amino acids for two weeks before and six months after liver cancer surgery had a lower recurrence rate at 30 months and lower AFP and PIVKA-II at 36 months, though five-year survival did not differ.
Supplements
Green tea and weight loss
Rats fed a high-fat diet with 2% water-soluble green tea extract for eight weeks gained 5.6% less weight and accumulated 17.8% less visceral fat than controls, Polish researchers report. Both doses tested also cut protein digestion by about 11%. The authors call the effect dose-dependent.
Supplements
Micronutrients better for bipolar disorder than conventional treatment
A case report describes a 21-year-old woman with bipolar II disorder, ADHD and anxiety whose mood and hyperactivity improved over eight weeks of vitamin and mineral supplements, slid back when she stopped, and improved again when she resumed. No adverse effects were seen.

Fish oil helps chronic heart failure - study
Pooling seven randomized trials of 825 chronic heart failure patients, researchers found fish oil supplements raised left ventricular ejection fraction by 2.5% and cut end-systolic volume by 7.85 ml, with larger gains among patients with non-ischaemic heart failure.
Supplements
Antioxidants may help cut pancreatic cancer risk
A Gut study followed 23,658 people for 10 years and identified 49 pancreatic cancers. Those in the top three quartiles of combined vitamin C, E and selenium intake had 67 percent lower risk than the lowest quartile; selenium and vitamin E alone tracked with 51 and 43 percent lower risk.
Supplements
Whey protein isolate offsets effects of high fat diet
Female mice on a high-fat diet for 11 weeks with whey protein isolate in their drinking water gained less weight and body fat and kept more lean mass than controls eating the same calories, and showed better glucose tolerance and fewer liver lipid droplets.

Dietary supplements may modify cancer stem cells
Writing in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, Young S. Kim and colleagues say bioactive food components including vitamins A and D, genistein, EGCG, sulforaphane, curcumin and choline may modify the self-renewal of cancer stem cells, whose existence remains unproven.
Supplements
Antioxidant supplements may prevent breast cancer
A BMC Cancer study of 2,362 Canadian breast cancer cases and 2,462 controls found premenopausal women who took zinc for 10 years or more were 54 percent less likely to develop the disease. Dietary antioxidants and shorter supplementation showed no association.
Supplements
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids help rheumatoid arthritis
A meta-analysis of ten randomized trials found rheumatoid arthritis patients taking more than 2.7 g of omega-3 fatty acids daily for at least three months cut NSAID use by 48 percent, and improved tender and swollen joint counts, morning stiffness and physical function.

The True Risk of Supplements Finally Exposed
Mercola cites Alliance for Natural Health International data placing supplements in a "super-safe" risk band: by those figures a person is roughly 900 times more likely to die of food poisoning than from a supplement, and adverse drug reactions are 62,000 times more likely to kill.

Dietary supplements helps children with HIV/AIDS
A review in a Chinese medical journal reports mixed effects of supplements in children with HIV/AIDS. Selenium, vitamin D, B, C and E and multivitamins were tied to benefits, while vitamin A doubled mortality risk in infants exposed through breastfeeding and zinc aided viral production.
Supplements
Omega-3 fatty acids may cut Alzheimer's risk
Among 1,219 dementia-free people over 65, eating about one extra gram of omega-3 a day was associated with 20 to 30 percent lower blood levels of beta-amyloid, a marker tied to Alzheimer's. Nine other nutrients showed no such link, the Neurology study found.
