Mercola reviews research in Nutrition & Metabolism finding that what, when and how much you eat shapes how much muscle resistance training builds. He puts 80 percent of an exercise program's results down to food and only 20 percent to the exercise itself.

L-carnitine supplements help ventricular fibrosis, heart failure
In rats with hypertensive heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, L-carnitine restored left-ventricular free carnitine, eased fibrosis and stiffening, prevented pulmonary congestion and improved survival. The authors tie the effect to arachidonic acid and prostacyclin production.

Chitosan supplements may help detoxify your system
Research in Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry suggests chitosan may speed excretion of endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Rats fed it for 10 days excreted more bisphenol A and a phthalate, and 3 grams a day helped healthy men clear dioxins and PCBs. It also promoted fat excretion.

L-Leucine Helps Diamond–Blackfan Anemia
In Rps19-deficient mice modelling Diamond-Blackfan anemia, L-leucine raised hemoglobin concentration by 19 percent and red blood cell counts by 18 percent, Lund University researchers report in Blood. They say the results support clinical trials of L-leucine for the disorder.

L-Cysteine supplementation as an adjuvant therapy for type-2 diabetes
A literature review by S.K. Jain reports that cysteine-rich whey protein improved glucose metabolism in diabetic animals and type 2 patients, and that L-cysteine may upregulate insulin-dependent signaling. Jain says further studies are needed to confirm any clinical benefit.

Who says there's no cure for Alzheimer's? Try heat-processed ginseng!
A Nutritional Neuroscience study of 40 patients with moderately severe Alzheimer's disease found heat-processed ginseng improved cognitive and non-cognitive assessment scores and Mini-Mental State scores from three months, with gains holding through six months of follow-up.

Alpha-lipoic acid helps memory, but shortens lifespan
In SAMP8 mice, alpha-lipoic acid improved memory and reversed markers of oxidative stress but cut survival from 34 weeks to 20. The authors suggest other antioxidants may behave the same way, helping memory while shortening lifespan.

Proven to Kill Cancer Cells without Killing You
Mercola argues chemotherapy destroys healthy cells and spares the resistant cancer stem cells that make tumours more aggressive. He points to compounds showing “selective cytotoxicity,” among them bromelain from pineapple stems, which beat 5-fluorouracil in an animal study in Planta Medica.

Diabetics should drink green tea - study suggests
Diabetic rats given 200 mg/kg of green tea extract had lower serum glucose and total cholesterol and lost significant weight compared with untreated rats; the 100 mg/kg dose did not work. Triglycerides, LDL and HDL cholesterol stayed unchanged.

Selenium supplements may cut risk of death from breast cancer
Among 3,146 Swedish women with invasive breast cancer followed from 1987 to 2009, those with the highest dietary selenium intake were 31 percent less likely to die of the disease. The inverse link looked strongest among patients who had ever smoked.

Breaking news: Green tea extract fights obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease
In a three-month randomized, double-blind trial of 56 obese, hypertensive adults, 379 mg of green tea extract a day lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, insulin resistance, LDL, triglycerides and inflammatory markers, and raised HDL.

Could This Be Nature's Near-Perfect Blood Sugar Regulator?
A study in Frontiers in Genetics compared the livers of mice fed krill oil with those fed fish oil and found krill oil had the stronger effect on genes governing glucose and fat metabolism. Mercola reads this as an added benefit for people with obesity or type 2 diabetes.

Hemp seed oil
Pressed from cannabis sativa seeds, hemp seed oil is about 80 percent essential fatty acids and carries a 3:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3. The piece credits essential fatty acids with roles in heart health, brain and nerve development and cell membranes, and calls the THC impression false.

Fish oil fights Rheumatoid arthritis
A review by De Silva and colleagues in Galle Medical Journal found 11 of 12 randomized controlled trials rated fish oil significantly more effective than placebo for rheumatoid arthritis, with side effects mild when they occurred.

New Update: Only 4 mg of This May Help You Maintain Youthfulness
Dr. Mercola describes astaxanthin, the carotenoid from microalgae that turns salmon, shrimp and flamingos pink, as a powerful antioxidant with claimed benefits for cell membranes, mitochondria, DNA, immunity, cognition and triglycerides. Synthetic versions may not act the same way.

High carotenoid intake linked to lower risk for breast cancer
Pooling 18 cohorts covering over a million women and 33,380 breast cancers, researchers found the highest intakes of alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and lutein/zeaxanthin went with 13-16% lower risk of ER-negative breast cancer. Beta-cryptoxanthin tracked with lower risk of both types.

This animal food may cut your risk of heart disease
Transgenic mice with chronic inflammation ate a high-fat casein diet with or without krill powder for six weeks. The krill group ended with lower hepatic and plasma triacylglycerol and cholesterol, reduced cholesterol-synthesis gene expression and less liver TNF-alpha.

Vitamin E succinate helps fight pancreatic cancer
In laboratory work reported in Genes and Nutrition, vitamin E succinate curbed proliferation of pancreatic cancer cells, induced apoptosis, and suppressed survivin, a protein that keeps cancer cells from dying.
