Most cancer patients who took a daily omega-3 supplement for 10 weeks kept or gained muscle mass, while those taking nothing kept or lost it, a new study found. Mercola sets this against cachexia, the wasting syndrome that affects more than 80 percent of advanced cancer patients.

Omega-3 fatty acids ward off macular degeneration
Among more than 38,000 women in the Women's Health Study followed for 10 years, with 235 cases, regular DHA, EPA and fish intake, at least one serving of fish weekly, was associated with a 35 to 45% lower risk of visually significant macular degeneration.
Supplements
Potassium Iodide (KI)
A CDC fact sheet explaining that potassium iodide, a stable iodine salt, blocks the thyroid from taking up radioactive iodine after a nuclear or radiological release. It protects only the thyroid, cannot keep radioactive iodine out of the body, and cannot undo damage already done.

The Spice that Helps Prevent Cancer - Now Being Used to Repair Stroke Damage
Scientists built a new molecule, CNB-001, from curcumin, the key component of turmeric. In laboratory experiments it acted on the mechanisms that protect and regenerate brain cells after a stroke, repairing damage at the molecular level.

Cinnamon extract may prevent or cure Alzheimer's disease
In Alzheimer's model mice, an orally given cinnamon extract removed tetrameric amyloid species from the brain, corrected locomotion defects and improved cognitive behavior, Tel Aviv University researchers report in PLoS ONE. The work was done in mice and cell cultures, not people.

Magnesium supplements relieve hot flashes in breast cancer patients
In a pilot trial, 25 breast cancer patients completed four weeks on 400 to 800 mg of magnesium oxide daily. Weekly hot flashes dropped from 52.2 to 27.7, a 41% fall, and hot flash scores fell about 50%. Fourteen of the 25 more than halved their score.

Sprouts plus supplements could boost broccoli’s anti-cancer ability
Four volunteers ate broccoli sprouts, broccoli powder, or both; blood and urine three hours later showed nearly twice the sulforaphane absorption from the combination. Sprouts supply myrosinase, the enzyme powder lacks and overcooking destroys.
Supplements
Bitter Orange
A fact sheet on bitter orange: used traditionally for nausea, indigestion and constipation, and now marketed for heartburn, appetite and weight loss. Evidence for health uses is thin, and its synephrine resembles the main chemical in banned ephedra, so it may not be the safer substitute.
Supplements
Bilberry
Bilberry fruit is used for diarrhea, menstrual cramps, eye problems and circulatory conditions, and its leaf for diabetes, but clinical studies have not confirmed claims about night vision and evidence is insufficient for any condition. High doses of leaf extract are considered unsafe.
Supplements
Astragalus
A fact sheet on astragalus, used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, usually with other herbs, to support immunity and, in China, for chronic hepatitis and as an adjunct in cancer care. Evidence remains limited, with high-quality clinical trials generally lacking.
Supplements
Aloe Vera
A fact sheet on aloe vera: traditionally used topically for wounds and skin conditions and orally as a laxative, and now also taken for diabetes, asthma and osteoarthritis. In 2002 the FDA required OTC aloe laxatives off the market or reformulated after makers did not supply required data.
Supplements
Alternative medicines commonly used in Turkey to treat diabetes
A survey of 396 diabetes patients in Turkey found 34.6 percent used complementary and alternative medicine alongside conventional treatment, and 73 percent of those had not told their doctors or nurses. The authors say nurses should learn about and discuss these remedies.
Supplements
Echinacea, vitamin C fight common cold, COPD
In a trial of 719 people with new colds, illness ran 6.34 days on blinded echinacea versus 6.87 on blinded placebo, and severity scores also favored echinacea. Media reports framed the result as no significant benefit; changes in interleukin-8 and neutrophil counts were not significant.

Echinacea to chicken soup: How to combat the common cold
In a trial of more than 700 people aged 12 to 80 in Dane County, Wisconsin, those given echinacea saw their week-long colds shortened by 7 to 10 hours and reported slightly milder symptoms. Immune function did not differ between those who took it and those who did not.
Supplements
Echinacea, vitamin C help common cold?
In a trial of 719 people with early cold symptoms, echinacea shortened illness by seven to 10 hours, a difference the researchers did not treat as significant, and did not ease severity. A 2007 Lancet Infectious Diseases review had reported larger benefits.

This Powerful Nutrient Improves Concentration by 60% and Fights ADHD
A clinical study found children with ADHD improved on clinical scores and EEG patterns after 13 weeks of krill oil supplements; the results are not yet published. An earlier 2007 study of adults reported concentration improved by an average of more than 60 percent over six months.

Study explains why omega-3 fatty acids prevent breast cancer
Omega-3 ethyl esters suppressed NF-kB transcriptional activity in luminal A, luminal B and basal breast cancer cell lines but had no effect on HER2-overexpressing cells, suggesting omega-3s may act against only some subtypes. Ongoing clinical trials should settle the question.

Soy Supplements Effective for Menopausal Symptoms - study
A double-blind Brazilian trial of 60 postmenopausal women found a soy supplement with 90 mg of isoflavone and hormone therapy improved hot flashes and muscle pain similarly, by 49.8 and 45.6 percent at 16 weeks. The authors say soy may be an effective alternative.
