Turkey contains plenty of tryptophan, but no more than most poultry, so the holiday drowsiness likely comes from something else. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid used to make serotonin, niacin and auxin, and supplements are believed to aid sleep because tryptophan leads to melatonin.

Fish oil DHA doesn't help Alzheimer's disease - What you need to know
In an 18-month JAMA trial, 2 grams of DHA daily did not slow decline in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's: cognitive scores shifted 8.27 points against 7.98 for placebo, and an MRI substudy showed no effect on brain volume.

Bran Cuts Death Risk in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients
CDC researchers project that nearly a third of Americans could have type 2 diabetes by 2050 without action, against 7.8 percent in 2007. A Harvard study in Circulation found women with the disease who ate more bran died less often from all causes and from cardiovascular disease.

Choline, betaine may cut breast cancer death risk
Tracking 1,508 breast cancer patients on Long Island, researchers report in FASEB Journal that higher choline and betaine intake accompanied lower all-cause and breast cancer death in dose-dependent fashion. They call the nutrients a promising prevention strategy.

When Never EVER to Use Fish Oil (video)
Drug industry insider Rudi Moerck argues in a video interview with Dr. Mercola that fish oil may not be the best source of omega-3 fats, while Mercola notes that most research on the benefits of EPA and DHA still rests on fish oil studies.

Omega-3 fatty acids help prevent breast cancer - study
Among 72,571 cancer-free women in the Shanghai Women's Health Study followed about eight years, those eating little marine omega-3 fat alongside a lot of omega-6 fat were twice as likely to develop breast cancer as women with high marine omega-3 intake.

Are you ready to live 10 years longer?
Mice given a supplement of valine, leucine and isoleucine lived 774 days, 95 days longer than unsupplemented mice, in a study from Pavia University. The amino acids also improved the elderly mice’s stamina and coordination and increased their mitochondria.

Garlic oil protects against heart disease in diabetes patients
Hsiu-Chung Ou's team fed diabetic rats garlic oil or corn oil and saw changes in the garlic group that protected against heart damage. The researchers credit garlic oil's antioxidant properties and note it holds as many as 20 potentially beneficial substances.

The cure for lung cancer may be in fish oil
A University of Nevada case report describes a 78-year-old man with terminal lung cancer who refused radiotherapy and chemotherapy, took 15 grams of DHA and EPA a day and avoided linoleic acid. His tumours shrank and disappeared, and he was alive five years later.

Soy supplements as effective as hormone therapy in easing menopausal symptoms
In a double-blind trial, 60 postmenopausal women took a 90 mg soy isoflavone supplement or hormone therapy for 16 weeks. Both eased hot flashes and muscle pain, by 49.8 and 45.6 percent, and vaginal dryness. Placebo matched them except on urogenital symptoms.

Omega-3 fatty acids don't cut risk of heart disease?
In 4,837 heart attack survivors aged 60 to 80, low doses of EPA and DHA or of ALA did not cut major cardiovascular events, researchers reported at the 2010 European Society of Cardiology Congress. Many variables were in play, so the trial does not settle the question.

Vitamin D May Protect Against Certain Cancers
An Oxford-led study in Genome Research found vitamin D receptor binding sites clustered near genes tied to multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, colorectal cancer and chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and traced direct interaction in 200 genes.

Form of Viagara Found in Supplement
The FDA recalled Joyful Slim Herb Supplement, sold as a natural weight-loss herb, after analysis found the undeclared drug desmethyl sibutramine, which can sharply raise blood pressure and pulse. J&H Besta Corp pulled the product on July 16 and buyers are told to return it for a refund.

Fish Oil, not Avastin, Fights Breast Cancer
An FDA advisory panel voted 12 to 1 to drop Avastin's breast cancer indication after follow-up studies failed to repeat its tumor-shrinking result. Separately, a lab study found omega-3 fatty acids downregulated a cancer-linked gene in breast cancer cells.

New evidence explains why fish oil fights breast cancer
Texas researchers report that a fish oil diet raised levels of the tumour suppressor PTEN in breast tumours in a mouse xenograft model, offering a mechanism for earlier observations, among them a cohort in which regular fish oil users were 32% less likely to develop breast cancer.
Supplements
Omega-3 fatty acids prevent breast cancer from spreading
DHA and EPA reduced the activity, though not the number, of CXCR4 receptors on MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, limiting their migration, researchers reported in Molecular Cancer Research. They call it a possible benefit for patients with metastatic breast cancer.
Supplements
Fish oil may reduce risk of breast cancer
Among 35,016 postmenopausal women followed six years, those who regularly used fish oil supplements were 32 percent less likely to develop breast cancer, particularly invasive ductal disease. The authors caution this is an association; a healthier lifestyle among users could explain it.

Glucosamine doesn't help chronic low-back pain - study
In a trial of 250 patients with chronic low back pain and degenerative lumbar osteoarthritis, 1,500 mg of glucosamine daily for six months brought no statistically significant advantage over placebo on disability, pain or quality of life at six months or at one year.
