In a study of 633 disease-free adults aged 65 and over, none of the 27 vitamin E users and none of the 23 vitamin C users were diagnosed with Alzheimer's over 4.3 years, against about 3.9 and 3.3 expected. Multivitamin use showed no association, and the supplement groups were tiny.

Excess vitamin A intake leads to calcific aortic valve disease
Mice fed high doses of vitamin A developed aortic valve stenosis and leaflet calcification, researchers report, suggesting hypervitaminosis A could be a new risk factor for calcific aortic valve disease. The form used differs from the carotenoids in plant foods.

Low vitamin D linked to Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease
A meta-analysis in Nutrition pooled six studies covering 319 Alzheimer's patients and five covering 434 Parkinson's patients against controls, and found both patient groups had lower blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D than healthy people.

Got hypertension? Take vitamin C supplements
Reviewing 21 trials averaging 500 mg a day for about eight weeks, Johns Hopkins researchers found vitamin C supplements lowered systolic pressure by 3.84 mm Hg and diastolic by 1.48 mm Hg, with slightly larger drops in hypertensive patients. They call for long-term trials.

Plasma vitamin C but not E may cut heart failure risk
Following 3,919 men aged 60 to 79 for about 11 years, researchers found each standard-deviation rise in plasma vitamin C was tied to 19% to 25% lower risk of heart failure. Dietary vitamin C intake and plasma vitamin E showed no such association.

Vitamin C protects against lead toxicity
In a rat study in Comparative Clinical Pathology, vitamin C protected best against lead toxicity: rats given lead acetate plus vitamin C showed blood, biochemical and tissue measures near normal, while garlic extract and calcium carbonate helped less.

Prediagnosis vitamin C helps survival in breast cancer patients
Among 3,405 Swedish women with invasive breast cancer, those in the highest quartile of vitamin C intake before diagnosis were 25 percent less likely to die of breast cancer and 16 percent less likely to die of any cause. Vitamin C use after diagnosis showed no association.

High dose vitamin C fights cancer - new studies
A phase I trial at Cancer Treatment Centers of America found IV vitamin C reached blood concentrations that inhibited tumor growth in mice, and the investigators say higher doses may show anti-cancer potential in future trials. Vitamin C also boosted gemcitabine's effect in lab work.

Vitamin E May Alleviate Symptoms of Liver Disease Brought on by Obesity
Fat can build up in the liver and cause the inflammation and scarring of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, which has no known treatment and often no symptoms until serious damage occurs. Two new studies examined vitamin E, which the piece says may help ease NASH symptoms.

Vitamin D Might Be Able to Slash Your Breast Cancer Risk by 90 Percent
Carole Baggerly of GrassrootsHealth, a breast cancer survivor, argues in a second interview that optimizing vitamin D levels may help prevent 16 or more cancers, citing more than 200 epidemiological studies, and urges regular serum testing.

Vitamin E fights cancer, but not alpha-tocopherol
A review concludes that delta- and gamma-tocopherols, but not alpha-tocopherol, prevent cancer in laboratory models. The authors' earlier work found a natural gamma-rich tocopherol mixture inhibited chemically induced lung, colon and mammary cancers and xenograft tumor growth.

Breast Cancer News: Folate, vitamin b12, methionine linked to lower breast cancer risk
Dongyan Yang and colleagues compared 2,325 women with breast cancer to 2,525 controls and found the highest folate intake tracked with 50 percent lower risk of ER-negative disease, while the highest vitamin B12 intake tracked with 27 percent lower breast cancer risk overall.

High vitamin A, low vitamin D increase osteoporosis risk
Mata-Granados and colleagues studied 232 healthy postmenopausal women and found those with vitamin D deficiency plus high serum retinol were about eight times more likely to develop osteoporosis. Seventy percent of the participants were vitamin D deficient.

Vitamin D may help stop liver fibrosis
Salk Institute researchers found calcipotriol, a synthetic vitamin D already approved for psoriasis, stopped the fibrotic response in mouse liver cells, and report high levels of vitamin D receptors in the liver cells that drive fibrosis. Clinical trials are being planned.

More than 80% of healthy Indians are Vitamin D deficient: Diabetes Foundation of India (PR)
The Diabetes Foundation of India estimates about 80 percent of Indians have below-normal vitamin D levels despite abundant sunshine, and warns that most people do not know about the deficiency or its consequences. Nearly every tissue carries vitamin D receptors.

Vitamin D deficiency a possible risk factor for autism
Writing in Dermato-endocrinology, John Cannell and William Grant argue a growing body of evidence links higher prenatal vitamin D levels to lower autism risk, citing lower serum vitamin D in children with autism, and suggest pregnant women get sun or take supplements.

Vitamin D in mushrooms as good as vitamin D in fish
In a 12-week study of 30 healthy adults, serum 25(OH)D rose similarly whether people took 2,000 IU of vitamin D2, vitamin D3, or mushroom powder supplying vitamin D2, researchers reported at an American Society for Biochemistry and Microbiology meeting.

Vitamin D associated with semen quality
Among 170 healthy men, sperm concentration, motility and morphology were best when serum vitamin D fell between 20 and 50 ng/mL; both higher and lower levels went with poorer measures. Other factors, including body mass index, may also play a part.
