In an observational analysis of 2,039 people with prediabetes, those in the highest third of blood vitamin D were 28 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes over a mean 2.7 years. The design cannot establish cause.

Antioxidants may help menopausal symptoms
A Japanese study of 160 women averaging 52 years found the severity of menopausal symptoms ran inversely to blood antioxidant potential, independent of age and body mass index. The authors say symptoms may be associated with a decline in antioxidant capacity.

Vitamin D cuts death risk in HIV carriers
Among 1,103 Tanzanian adults starting antiretroviral therapy, those deficient in vitamin D were twice as likely to die as those with sufficient levels, a PLoS One study found. Vitamin D status did not track with CD4 T-cell changes after treatment began.
Vitamins
Multivitamins help prevent memory loss in elderly women
Fifty-six elderly women who complained of memory loss took a multivitamin for 16 weeks. Helen Macpherson's team found faster responses on one measure of spatial working memory but no change in other cognitive processes, plus lower homocysteine and no sign of liver toxicity.

Here is why high serum vitamin D linked to high pancreatic cancer risk
In a study of Finnish men, those with the highest serum vitamin D but below-median vitamin D binding protein were five times as likely to develop pancreatic cancer as those with the lowest vitamin D. Higher binding protein on its own tracked with lower risk.
Vitamins
High prenatal vitamin D lowers type 1 diabetes risk in children
Among 29,072 Norwegian women, those with prenatal vitamin D in the lowest quartile were twice as likely as those in the highest to have a child who developed type 1 diabetes before age 15. The authors say the findings support launching a randomized prevention trial.

Vitamin D Fights Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer, Lung Cancer and Lymphoma - Study
Among 658 Norwegian patients with breast, colon or lung cancer or lymphoma, those in the highest quartile of serum 25-OHD at diagnosis were 64% less likely to die of cancer than those in the lowest. Levels below 46 nmol/L tracked with shorter survival across all four cancers.

Vitamin d deficiency boosts stroke risk
A Stroke study of 8,006 Japanese-American men in Hawaii found those in the lowest quintile of dietary vitamin D intake were about 24% more likely to have any stroke or a thromboembolic stroke over 34 years than those in the highest. Hemorrhagic stroke was not linked.
Vitamins
Vitamin B6 supplements help hypertriglyceridemia
Among 85 men with high triglycerides assigned to lysine, vitamin B6, both, carnitine or placebo, only vitamin B6 at 50 mg a day lowered triglycerides, by 36.6 mg/mL at six weeks, and it also cut total and HDL cholesterol by about 10 percent.
Vitamins
Vitamin D3 supplements fight prostate cancer, breast cancer - study confirms
Immunosuppressed mice carrying breast cancer grafts saw tumours shrink more than 50 percent on a diet with 5,000 IU/kg of vitamin D3 rather than 1,000 IU/kg, with similar results in prostate cancer mice. Unlike calcitriol, the supplement did not raise blood calcium.
Vitamins
Essentials of Sun Exposure in Pregnant Women
Sunlight remains a cheap source of vitamin D, and a Pittsburgh study found pregnant women deficient in it were much more likely to develop preeclampsia. The author says no findings show sun exposure harms the fetus apart from overheating.
Vitamins
Vitamin B12 deficiency linked to dementia risk
A review of 43 studies in International Psychogeriatrics tied low-normal or deficient vitamin B12 to higher risk of Alzheimer's, vascular dementia, Parkinson's and cognitive impairment, but found supplements did not help people with dementia who were not deficient.
Vitamins
Low vitamin D linked to high ovarian cancer death risk
Among 72 ovarian cancer patients in a Clinical Biochemistry study, those with serum vitamin D above 10 ng/mL were more likely to reach five-year survival than those below it. Patients averaged 12.5 ng/mL against 22.4 ng/mL in 65 healthy controls.

Folic acid supplements may cut stroke risk a bit, but not heart disease
A meta-analysis of 26 randomized trials covering 58,804 people tied folic acid supplementation to a 7 percent lower stroke risk, but found no effect on cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease or all-cause mortality. The authors call the stroke benefit potentially modest.

Vitamin D fights multiple sclerosis
Giving 3,010 IU of vitamin D3 daily to 156 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, French researchers found each 10 nmol/L rise in serum 25(OH)D was associated with a 13.7 percent lower relapse rate, levelling off above about 110 nmol/L.
Vitamins
Vitamin D may help fight pneumonia
Among 112 patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia in winter, those with severe vitamin D deficiency — below 30 nmol/L — were nearly 13 times as likely to die as those with sufficient levels. Cathelicidin and beta-defensin-2 levels did not predict mortality.
Vitamins
Multivitamins, fish oil cut heart disease risk
In a 12-week trial of 100 people with raised homocysteine, multivitamins lowered homocysteine and C-reactive protein more than placebo, while omega-3 fats lowered triglycerides. Omega-3s taken alone raised homocysteine, the researchers report.

CoQ10 prevents many diseases
CoQ10 is often used to treat or prevent conditions from heart failure and diabetes to Parkinson's disease, and more recently as a weight loss or antiaging supplement. The piece says it boosts metabolism, with any weight effect largest in people who are deficient, alongside diet and exercise.
