In a study of 52 men with low-risk prostate cancer on active surveillance, 55 percent of those taking 4,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily for a year saw their Gleason score or number of positive cores fall, while 34 percent worsened. No adverse events or significant PSA change occurred.

Vitamin C deficiency accelerates bone loss
Mice lacking the SMP30 gene and fed a vitamin C-free diet had smaller bone area, fewer osteoblasts and the lowest alkaline phosphatase levels in their femurs, along with elevated RANKL and PPAR-gamma, pointing to a shift toward bone loss when vitamin C is missing.
Vitamins
Vitamin C, zinc and omega 3 fatty acids may help asthma
A study of 70 children with moderately persistent asthma reported that vitamin C, zinc and omega-3 supplements improved asthma control scores, lung function and sputum inflammatory markers, with the combination working best. The paper has since been retracted over analysis errors.

Almost all breast cancer patients vitamin D deficient
In a small Pakistani case-control study, 86 of 90 breast cancer patients, or 95.6 percent, were vitamin D deficient, against 69 of 90 healthy controls. Mean serum vitamin D was 9.3 ng/mL in patients and 14.9 ng/mL in controls.

Vitamin E supplements help prevent breast cancer
In rats given a mammary carcinogen, diets with delta- or gamma-tocopherol cut average tumor mass to about 7 grams from 10.6 in controls, and reduced breast cancers by 42 and 32 percent. Alpha-tocopherol did nothing, and none of the tocopherols affected HER2-driven tumors.

Vitamin D plus calcium lower death risk in elderly
Pooling 24 randomized trials, researchers found elderly people taking vitamin D with calcium were 6 to 7 percent less likely to die over three years, while vitamin D alone showed no mortality benefit. About 151 people would need to take both for three years to prevent one death.

How much vitamin D do we need to prevent fractures?
A meta-analysis of 11 trials covering 31,022 people, average age 76, found vitamin D supplements cut hip fracture risk 10% and nonvertebral fracture 7%. Only the highest-intake quartile, averaging 800 IU a day, did better: 30% lower hip fracture risk and 14% lower nonvertebral risk.
Vitamins
Vitamin D helps fight multiple sclerosis
A Current Opinion in Neurology review finds high vitamin D levels at a first demyelinating event correlate with lower multiple sclerosis risk, as do high maternal levels during pregnancy. One small intervention trial found no effect on progression, but the reviewers call it underpowered.

Fluoride damages reproduction, vitamin E, vitamin C protect against it
A study in Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology found 60 days of fluoride raised endometrial malondialdehyde and lowered antioxidant enzyme activity in rats, while vitamins E and C countered the damage. The writer notes fluoride reaches over 75% of US drinking water.

Vitamin D Insufficiency Linked to Severe Asthma Exacerbation
Among 560 Puerto Rican children aged 6 to 14, those with asthma and vitamin D below 30 ng/mL were 2.6 times as likely as those with sufficient levels to have had a severe exacerbation in the past year. Among non-atopic children with asthma, the gap reached 6.2 times.
Vitamins
How much vitamin D do you need every day?
Reinhold Vieth puts the low end of the desirable serum vitamin D range at 50 to 75 nmol/L and the safe high end near 225 nmol/L, reachable without sun by taking about 10,000 IU of D3 a day. Canada's cancer society advises 1,000 IU daily.

Low serum vitamin d linked to myocardial infarction, ischemic heart disease, early death
Danish researchers measured 25-hydroxyvitamin D in 10,170 people and followed them for 29 years. Those in the lowest percentiles had 40% higher risk of ischemic heart disease, 64% higher risk of myocardial infarction and 57% higher risk of early death than those above the median.
Vitamins
Choline intake linked to lethal prostate cancer risk
Erin Richman and colleagues followed 47,896 men and found those in the highest quintile of choline intake were 70 percent more likely to develop lethal prostate cancer than those in the lowest. The study was observational and established no causal relationship.

Vitamin C helps children with autism
A small crossover trial of 18 residential school children with autism found high-dose vitamin C, about 8 grams per 70 kg daily, reduced symptom severity on a weekly behavior scale. The authors say the result fits a hypothesized dopaminergic action of ascorbic acid.
Vitamins
Vitamin B3 effective in fighting superbugs or MRSA
A Journal of Clinical Investigation study found nicotinamide boosted killing of Staphylococcus aureus up to 1,000-fold in mice and human blood samples, apparently by way of neutrophils: the effect disappeared in mice lacking C/EBP-epsilon or unable to produce neutrophils.

Coenzyme Q10 may protect against heart disease in type 2 diabetes patients
In diabetic db/db mice, adding coenzyme Q10 to the ACE inhibitor ramipril reduced superoxide formation, eased diastolic dysfunction and cut heart muscle enlargement and fibrosis. The work was done only in an animal model, so any benefit for people with type 2 diabetes remains unproven.
Vitamins
High vitamin D linked to lower risk of Alzheimer's disease
Among 498 women averaging 80 years old, those whose dietary vitamin D intake fell in the highest quintile were 77 percent less likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's over seven years. Intake tracked with Alzheimer's onset but not with other dementias.
Vitamins
Vitamin D may help treat inflammatory breast cancer
Inflammatory breast cancer cells exposed for 24 hours to 100 nm calcitriol, an active form of vitamin D, migrated 67.8% less, invaded 43.9% less and produced tumors 69.4% smaller than untreated cells, and seeded fewer metastases.
