Hong Kong researchers tested 15 vitamins in chemical model systems and in a fried snack food, and found several - among them biotin, pyridoxine, pyridoxamine and vitamin C - cut formation of the carcinogen acrylamide during processing by more than 50 percent.

Will Boosting Your Vitamin D Levels Help Prevent Colds or Not?
A JAMA trial gave 322 healthy adults monthly mega-doses of vitamin D3 for 18 months and counted 593 upper respiratory infections in that group against 611 on placebo. Dr. Mercola questions the dosing regimen and the control group's vitamin D levels.

Too much folic acid boosts breast cancer risk
A review of 39 studies in Revista Medica de Chile found no evidence that higher dietary folate lowers breast cancer risk, and some hints that heavy folic acid intake from fortified food may raise it. The reviewers urge caution where fortification is mandatory.

Coenzyme Q(10), vitamin E, selenium, methionine help human papillomavirus skin warts
In two controlled trials in Rome, a supplement of coenzyme Q10, vitamin E, selenium and methionine was given after cryotherapy for recurrent HPV skin warts, and alongside acyclovir for recurrent herpes. Both trials found significantly faster healing and fewer relapses than in control groups.

Breast cancer and vitamin D: What you need to know
The National Cancer Institute expected more than 230,000 U.S. breast cancer diagnoses in 2012. Research ties serum vitamin D above 40 ng/mL to a 30 percent lower risk, and other listed risk factors include medical radiation, hormone replacement therapy, alcohol and night-shift work.

Prostate Cancer News: Gamma-, delta-, but not alpha-tocopherol prevent prostate cancer
Rutgers researcher C.S. Yang reports that in animal models gamma- and delta-tocopherols and natural tocopherol mixtures protected against cancers including prostate cancer, while alpha-tocopherol did not, matching the SELECT trial's finding of higher incidence among alpha-tocopherol users.

Long-term folate supplementation cuts colorectal cancer risk
In a Western Australian study of 850 colorectal cancer patients and 958 controls, people who took folic acid supplements for more than four years had a 45 percent lower risk of left-sided colorectal cancer. Dietary folate showed no association on either side.

Choline In Eggs And Meat May Influence Gene Expression From Infancy To Adulthood
A FASEB Journal study links consuming 930 mg of choline in the third trimester to a 33 percent lower concentration of the stress hormone cortisol, compared with 430 mg a day. Pregnant women are currently advised to get 450 mg, which researchers suggest may not be enough.

Vitamin K1 linked to lower risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus - must read
Among 1,925 Spanish adults at high cardiovascular risk, those eating the most vitamin K1 had about half the type 2 diabetes risk. Each extra 100 micrograms a day tracked with 17% lower risk, and people who raised their intake over 5.5 years of follow-up were 51% less likely to develop the disease.

Got hypertension? Take vitamin C supplements!
A Johns Hopkins analysis of 21 short-term trials found vitamin C supplements, averaging 500 mg a day, lowered systolic pressure by 3.84 mm Hg and diastolic by 1.48 mm Hg, with slightly larger drops in hypertensive patients. Long-term trials are still needed.

Vitamin D good for pregnancy
A review by Odense University Hospital researchers found trials in which high-dose vitamin D prevented deficiency and increased weight gain, while observational studies linked lower vitamin D to preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, cesarean delivery and postpartum depression.

Could Vitamin D Help Prevent Meningitis?
Dutch researchers analysing children in Cape Town found each 100 hours of sunshine in the three months before diagnosis was associated with a 31 percent lower rate of tuberculous meningitis, and concluded vitamin D might play a role in the disease.

Vitamin D does not help people at high cardiovascular disease risk
In a trial of 151 vitamin D deficient adults at elevated cardiovascular risk, eight weeks of 50,000 IU vitamin D3 weekly failed to improve the lipid profile and slightly raised total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL. The trial was short and covered only this group.

Non-smoking Lung cancer patients may benefit from sufficient vitamin D
Among non-smoking lung cancer patients in NHANES III, those with serum vitamin D at 44 nmol/L or above had a 47 percent lower risk of dying than those below it, a Cancer Causes and Control study found. The apparent benefit vanished in people with high vitamin A levels.

Vitamin D deficiency linked to low respiratory tract infection
Among 206 newborns followed for two years, 62 developed an acute lower respiratory infection, mostly bronchiolitis. Those children had lower cord blood 25(OH)D levels, leading the authors to link low cord blood vitamin D with higher infection risk in the first two years.

Chronic fatigue syndrome linked to vitamin D insufficiency
A University College London team measured vitamin D in 221 chronic fatigue syndrome patients and found a mean of 44.4 nmol/L, well below the 75 nmol/L considered optimal and lower than in women from the general population, though similar to patients with other chronic conditions.

Vitamin D supplements help heart failure patients live longer
Among 3,009 heart failure patients and 46,825 controls in an Israeli health plan, those with vitamin D deficiency were 52% more likely to die during a median 518 days of follow-up. Vitamin D supplementation was independently linked to a 32% lower death risk in heart failure patients.

Antioxidant use during breast cancer treatment cuts recurrence, death risk
Among 2,264 women with early-stage breast cancer, frequent postdiagnosis use of vitamin C and vitamin E came with 27 and 29 percent lower recurrence risk, and vitamin E with 24 percent lower risk of death from any cause. Frequent combined carotenoid use went the other way.
