Human breast cancer cells treated with a potent form of vitamin D died within days, and tumors in mice shrank by more than half on average, some disappearing. A review of 28 studies covering nearly 100,000 people tied high vitamin D to 43 percent lower cardiometabolic risk.

Vitamin D deficiency is why you get flu and other infections
A University of Copenhagen study in Nature Immunology reports that T cells need vitamin D to activate against bacteria and viruses. Carsten Geisler's team traces the signalling chain from the T cell receptor through the vitamin D receptor gene to PLC-gamma1.

Low vitamin D linked to muscle fat (PR)
A Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism study found 59 percent of subjects carried too little vitamin D and nearly a quarter were seriously deficient, below 20 ng/ml. Investigators say it is the first work to link vitamin D levels to fat accumulating in muscle tissue.

Vitamin D helps Gaucher disease patients
The FDA approved velaglucerase alfa (VPRIV) for Gaucher disease, and a separate study of 60 patients aged 17 to 85 found vitamin D insufficiency common among them, leading researchers to recommend supplementation to protect bone health in type 1 Gaucher disease.

Poligrip denture cream linked to zinc poisoning
GlaxoSmithKline will stop using zinc in Poligrip denture cream after hundreds of users sued, saying the product damaged their nervous systems, causing loss of balance, numbness and in some cases paralysis. An attorney says heavy users ingested about 45 times the recommended zinc.

Vitamin D Fights Crohn's Disease
A new study found vitamin D acts on the beta defensin 2 and NOD2 genes, both linked to Crohn's disease. Mercola urges patients to have their blood levels measured rather than guess, calls 55 to 65 ng/ml therapeutic, and warns that taking too much vitamin D can do harm.

High levels of vitamin D in older people can reduce heart disease and diabetes (PR)
A Warwick Medical School review of 28 studies covering 99,745 people found high vitamin D levels in middle-aged and elderly people associated with a 33 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease, a 55 percent reduction for type 2 diabetes and 51 percent for metabolic syndrome.

Vitamin D may help pre-diabetes
A review of studies published between 1969 and 2009 in Endocrine Practice found most cross-sectional and prospective work showed an inverse link between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, HbA1c and pre-diabetes, and a few trials found supplements improved insulin measures.

Swine flu, vaccine and vitamins
A Harvard School of Public Health poll found 44 percent of American adults believe the 2009 swine flu pandemic is over, and 40 percent of parents have had their children vaccinated. CDC reported flat activity and nine more child deaths that week.

Vitamin D newsletter: More letters on vitamin D and autism
A Vitamin D Council newsletter reprinting three reader letters sent in response to an earlier issue on autism, among them an aunt's account of her nephew's speech and mood improving after she gave him 2,000 IU of vitamin D a day.

Vitamin c help would healing
A 1982 report by Ringsdorf and Cheraskin described faster recovery in patients taking 500 to 3,000 mg of vitamin C daily after surgery, injuries and ulcers. Four grams a day also improved newly made collagen in a boy with Type VI Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

The Vitamin D newsletter: Another autism case report
The Vitamin D Council gives an entire newsletter to one mother's unedited case report of her son's autism, which began around age 2.5 with sleeplessness, anxiety, obsessive repetitive questions, sensory aversions, toe-walking and self-stimulating behaviors.

Vitamin E may boost memory in older people - study
Aged rats fed a vitamin E-supplemented diet learned a water maze faster and retained their memory, while unsupplemented rats kept only 40 percent of theirs. The compound PQQ had a similar effect. The authors conclude vitamin E may ease age-related cognitive decline.

Vitamin D May Cut Colon Cancer Risk
An EPIC analysis of 520,000 people in ten Western European countries, published in the BMJ, found those with the highest blood vitamin D were 40 percent less likely to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Levels above 75 nmol/L brought no further reduction.

Low vitamin D linked to MS relapse risk (press release)
In UCSF research on childhood-onset multiple sclerosis, each 10 ng/mL rise in blood vitamin D corresponded to a 34 percent lower rate of later relapses. Lead author Ellen Mowry calls it the first look at vitamin D and disease course, and says it justifies a trial of supplementation.

Calcium, Vitamin D used Together Cut Fracture Risk
A Copenhagen meta-analysis of seven trials covering 68,517 people averaging age 70 found vitamin D alone did not change fracture risk, while vitamin D with calcium cut overall fractures 8% and hip fractures 16%. The authors disclosed fees from major drug makers.

Vitamin C Protects Against Hypertension-Induced DNA Damage
In 32 male Wistar rats with surgically induced renovascular hypertension, seven days of vitamin C at 150 mg/kg protected blood, brain, liver and heart cells against hypertension-induced DNA damage and eased the hypertension itself, a Human & Experimental Toxicology study found.

Alzheimer’s news: Cocktail of nutrients helps Alzheimer's patients
MIT's Richard Wurtman and colleagues gave 225 Alzheimer's patients a 12-week drink of choline, uridine, DHA, B vitamins and antioxidants or a placebo. Verbal memory improved in 40 percent on the drink against 24 percent on placebo, with the mildest cases benefiting most. Danone funded the trial.
