In a trial of 225 Alzheimer's patients, a cocktail of uridine, choline and omega-3 fatty acids plus B vitamins, phospholipids and antioxidants improved verbal memory in those with mild disease. Richard Wurtman designed it to target synapse loss, which he believes is the root cause.

Vitamin D linked to cardiac deaths in blacks
Kevin Fiscella's team analysed 15,000 U.S. adults and found the most severe vitamin D deficiency came with a 40% higher risk of cardiac death, with risk falling as vitamin D levels rose. Black participants were 38% more likely to die than whites.

Depression News: Sleep, vitamin D help depression
A small trial in Applied Nursing Research gave vitamin D3 to nine women with serum levels below 40 ng/mL. The six who finished raised their levels by an average 27 ng/mL and dropped their Beck Depression Inventory-II scores by about 10 points, which the authors call suggestive.

Putting Limits on Vitamin E (PR)
A Tel Aviv University team pooled the clinical data on vitamin E and heart disease and warns that indiscriminate high-dose supplementation does more harm than good. The researchers say some people may be harmed and others may benefit, and are working out who gains.

Vitamin C enhances production of adult stem cells
Chinese researchers report in Cell Stem Cell that vitamin C improves the reprogramming of mouse and human adult cells into induced pluripotent stem cells. Other antioxidants did not do the same, so the team suspects the effect is not simply antioxidant activity.

Citrus surprise: Vitamin C boosts the reprogramming of adult cells into stem cells (PR)
Researchers led by Duanqing Pei report that vitamin C improves the very low efficiency of reprogramming adult cells into induced pluripotent stem cells, after they linked high reactive oxygen species to poor reprogramming. Cell Stem Cell published the work.

Autism rate on the rise, vitamin D may help
The CDC reported autism spectrum disorder prevalence rose 57 percent from 2002 to 2006, reaching one in 110 eight-year-olds, and said a true increase in risk cannot be ruled out. The report names no cause; Vitamin D Council director John Cannell has proposed vitamin D deficiency as one factor.

The Single Most Crucial Nutrient to Energize Every Cell in Your Body
In mice fed a high fat and fructose diet, CoQ10 supplements lowered inflammatory and metabolic stress markers in the liver, findings in Biochemical Pharmacology that suggest the compound may protect against or slow obesity-related fatty liver.

More Vitamin D Studies of Interest
The Vitamin D Council newsletter covers Bruce Hollis and Carol Wagner's trial of about 500 pregnant women at 400, 2,000 or 4,000 IU a day. The highest dose caused no adverse events but left newborns averaging 27 ng/ml, and mothers needed 40 ng/ml to maximize activated vitamin D.

Are CoQ10 supplements recommended for cancer patients?
Karen Collins answers that evidence on CoQ10 in cancer care is thin: studies on preventing chemotherapy heart damage are inconsistent, some animal work suggests boosting it could work against chemotherapy and radiation, and it may interact with warfarin. Ask your doctor first.

Important New Vitamin D Research Papers
Mercola points readers to papers and presentations from a Canadian vitamin D conference, including work on vitamin D and cancer prevention, UVB and cancer, and vitamin D and breast cancer, and repeats his advice to optimize vitamin D levels.

Arginine doesn't cut death risk from heart attack
A Fudan University meta-analysis pooling two trials covering 927 patients found oral L-arginine did not improve outcomes in unstable coronary artery disease. Supplemented patients were 7 percent less likely to die after acute myocardial infarction, but the difference was not significant.

Vitamin C may promote age-related cataract in women
Among 24,593 Swedish women followed 8.2 years, those who took vitamin C supplements were 25 percent more likely to have a cataract extraction, and those who took them more than 10 years 46 percent more likely. The authors say the use of such supplements may be associated with higher risk.

Women at risk from vitamin A deficiency (Press Release)
Newcastle University researchers found that 29 of 62 women studied, 47 percent, carry a genetic variation that reduces how much vitamin A their bodies can make from beta-carotene. Dr. Georg Lietz says beta-carotene is not an effective substitute for many women.

Expensive cholesterol drug no better than vitamin
A New England Journal of Medicine study found Merck's cholesterol drug Zetia less effective than the cheap vitamin niacin at reducing artery buildup in people already taking statins. It is the third study to question Zetia and the related Vytorin, which earn Merck billions a year.

Some Data on Vitamin D Supplementation
The Institute of Medicine's 1997 adequate intakes run from 200 IU a day under age 51 to 600 IU past 70, far below the 4,000 to 6,000 IU some experts recommend. Reinhold Vieth argued in 1999 that 200 IU prevents osteomalacia but not osteoporosis.

Multivitamins may help cut allergy risk
A Swedish study of more than 2,000 eight-year-olds found current multivitamin use unrelated to allergic rhinitis, eczema, asthma or sensitization. Children who started supplements before age four were 39% less likely to have allergic disease, which the authors call a suggestion, not proof.

How Much Sunshine Does it Take to Make Enough Vitamin D?
Scientists at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research built a calculator estimating how many minutes of sun your skin needs to make 25 mcg (1,000 IU) of vitamin D, since the answer shifts with latitude, skin type, season, time of day and atmosphere. Mercola walks through entering the inputs.
