With the Obama daughters vaccinated against H1N1, the editor argues the vaccine is safe for healthy people but untested in pregnant women and those with medical conditions, and points to a 1999 study in which 1,000 mg doses of vitamin C helped prevent and treat cold and flu.

Vitamin D supplements taken in early life prevent type 1 diabetes*
In Lancet data on children of 12,055 Finnish women due to give birth in 1966, those who regularly took vitamin D supplements were 88 percent less likely to have type 1 diabetes than those who took none, and children suspected of rickets were three times as likely to develop it.

Suboptimal vitamin D found in millions of US children*
Analyzing NHANES data on about 5,000 children aged 1 to 11, researchers reported in Pediatrics that roughly 20% fell below the 50 nmol/L vitamin D level the AAP recommends, and more than two-thirds — including 92% of Black children — were under 75 nmol/L.

The Elderly with Vitamin D Deficiency Die Earlier*
In an Austrian study of 614 people followed 6.2 years, those in the lowest quartile of 25(OH)D were 97 percent more likely to die of any cause and 378 percent more likely to die of cardiovascular disease. The authors say it is unclear whether low vitamin D is cause or consequence.

Higher folates, not antioxidants, can reduce hearing loss risk in men*
Men over 60 who ate and supplemented the most folate were 20 percent less likely to develop hearing loss, according to research presented at the 2009 AAO-HNSF meeting. Intake of antioxidant vitamins C and E and beta carotene showed no such link.

Vitamin D can save half million babies each year: study*
In a trial presented in Bruges, pregnant women given 4,000 IU of vitamin D a day halved their premature birth risk compared with those on 400 IU, and had fewer small babies, 25 percent fewer infections, and less diabetes, hypertension and preeclampsia. No side effects appeared.

Vitamin D Doubles Colon Cancer Survival Rates
A study in the British Journal of Cancer found colorectal cancer patients with the highest average 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels had half the cancer-specific mortality, and 40 percent lower overall mortality, of those with the lowest levels.

Vegan moms need to take Vitamin B12 supplements, study suggests
A case report in Archives of Pediatrics describes a 10-month-old breastfed baby of a vegan mother with vitamin B12, K and D deficiencies, developmental disorders and a low red blood cell count. Supplements corrected the deficiencies and the infant gained weight and improved.

Low vitamin intake linked to high risk of asthma
A Nottingham University meta-analysis of 40 studies from 1980 to 2007 found people with asthma took in significantly less vitamin A, and those with severe asthma about 50 percent less than those with mild disease. Vitamin E intake showed no link to asthma risk.

Once again study suggests high vitamin D cuts breast cancer risk
Rejnmark's Danish case-control study of 142 women with breast cancer and 420 without found those in the top tertile of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D were 48% less likely to have the disease, with the same pattern in receptor-positive and receptor-negative tumors.

How Much Vitamin D Do You Really Need to Take?
Mercola revisits vitamin D dosing, noting the U.S. RDA of 400 IU was set to prevent rickets and arguing it does nothing for cancer, heart disease or infection, while summer sun on the skin can generate roughly 20,000 units.
Vitamins
Low vitamin D linked to higher risk of breast cancer
Among 166 women being treated for breast cancer, nearly 70 percent had low blood vitamin D, with the lowest levels in those with late-stage disease and in non-Caucasian women, University of Rochester researchers reported. The average level was 27 nanograms per milliliter.

Vitamin K3 may help fight breast cancer - study
Researchers at Keio University found vitamin K3 killed MCF-7 breast cancer cells in culture, fragmenting DNA and disabling mitochondria via reactive oxygen species and caspase-7 and -9. They suggest it might prove useful in breast cancer chemotherapy.

Blacks, Hispanics at higher risk for swine flu
A New York Daily News report by Juan Gonzales said blacks and Hispanics are more susceptible to swine flu infection and suggested vitamin D as a preventive, and argued the CDC grew reluctant to report the ethnic disparity as the death toll rose.

Newly Discovered Role of Vitamin C in Skin Protection
A vitamin C derivative, ascorbic acid 2-phosphate, promoted wound healing and helped protect skin cells' DNA from oxidative damage in a study. Mercola notes the cosmetics relevance but warns that containing vitamin C is no guarantee a product is beneficial.

Vitamin D and Calcium Act Jointly to Prevent Cancer
Peterlik and colleagues argue in Anticancer Research that vitamin D and calcium jointly regulate cell growth, listing three ways 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and extracellular calcium interact, and suggest the two may work better taken together than alone.

Got hypertension? Use vitamin D!
A review in Nature Reviews Cardiology by S. Pilz and colleagues concludes vitamin D sufficiency promotes lower arterial blood pressure, though not every trial agreed. The authors suggest supplementing patients with hypertension whose 25-hydroxyvitamin D falls below target.

IV Vitamin C Used to Recover Terminal Swine Flu Case
Dr. Mercola relays a case report from Dr. Thomas Levy: a New Zealand farmer hospitalised with swine flu and undiagnosed leukemia kept deteriorating on Tamiflu and antibiotics until his family pressed the hospital to try intravenous vitamin C, after which staff noted signs of improvement.
