Monday Feb 16, 2105 (foodconsumer.org) -- Dr. Shivashankara A.R. from Father Muller Medical College in Karnataka, India and colleagues conducted a study and found evidence suggesting that using cell phone may harm cells.

The researchers analyzed the levels of salivary enzymes, proteins, and antioxidants including amylase, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malondialdehdye (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) from young college-going cell phone users to see if cell phone radiation would cause any harm.

They found frequent cell phone users significantly increased amylase, LDH and MDA in saliva compared to infrequent cell phone users while the decreases in salivary total proteins, GSH and flow rate were not statistically significant.

The study concluded "Significant changes in salivary enzymes and MDA suggest adverse effect of high use of cell phones on cell health."

Cell phones were recognized as a Class B Carcinogen or possible cancer-causing agent in 2011 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization (WHO).  The same category includes diesel engine exhaust, some pesticides and some heavy metals.  The expert panel says that some evidence suggests regular use of cell phones increased the risk of brain tumors (gliomas) and acoustic neuromas.
