Low carb diet better for obese women with insulin resistance
In a 12-week study of 45 obese women with insulin resistance, those assigned a low-carb diet lost 19.6 pounds against 16.2 pounds on a low-fat diet, a difference of 3.4 pounds. Jenny Craig funded the work, presented at an Endocrine Society meeting.

Dramatically Effective New Natural Way to Starve Cancer and Obesity
Mercola summarizes William Li's TED talk on anti-angiogenesis, cutting off the blood vessels that feed a tumor, and on eating foods that do it. Too few vessels can leave wounds unhealed and contribute to heart disease and stroke; too many drive other diseases.

Mediterranean diet linked to low cancer risk
A Greek case-control study of 239 patients and 194 controls found that rising two units on a 9-point Mediterranean diet score was associated with a 30 percent lower risk of upper aerodigestive tract cancers. No single dietary component explained the link.

Southern European Atlantic Diet helps prevent heart attack
Comparing 820 heart attack patients with 2,196 others, University of Porto researchers found those adhering most closely to the Southern European Atlantic Diet, rich in fish, vegetable soup, potatoes and wine, were 33 percent less likely to have had a heart attack.

Can Autism Diet Help Autistic Children?
A two-stage trial in Nutritional Neuroscience put Danish children aged 4 to 12 on a strict gluten- and casein-free diet and recorded significant gains on autism, attention and hyperactivity scales over 8 to 12 months. The authors call the improvement sustainable but say more work is needed.

Diet linked to Alzheimer's disease risk
People aged 65 and over who ate more nuts, fish, tomatoes, poultry, cruciferous vegetables, fruit and leafy greens were up to 38 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer's over 3.9 years, in a study of 2,148 people. Those with the disease ate more high-fat dairy, red meat, organ meat and butter.

Healthy diet cuts Alzheimer's disease risk
Among 2,148 dementia-free adults aged 65 and older followed about four years, those eating more salad dressing, nuts, fish, poultry, tomatoes and leafy greens and less high-fat dairy, red meat, organ meat and butter were less likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Walnuts and low fat diet may curb growth of prostate cancer
Prostate tumors grew slowly in mice fed a diet with 20 percent of calories from walnuts - about as slowly as on a 5 percent fat diet - while a 20 percent fat diet sped growth. Paul Davis says a man would need roughly 500 calories of walnut oil for a comparable effect.

Diet and Exercise Beat Drugs for Diabetes Heart Risks
Four studies in the New England Journal of Medicine found no heart benefit for diabetics from lowering systolic pressure with antihypertensives, from adding an HDL-raising drug, or from two blood sugar drugs. Mercola argues weight loss, activity and nutrition matter more.

Featured Product: Smart for Life Cookies
A look at Smart for Life's cookie diet: chocolate, blueberry and oatmeal meal-replacement cookies sold in 9-day and 2-week programs, the latter for $279. The writer says only users can judge whether they work, and notes baked goods can contain some acrylamide.

Reduced fat intake cuts invasive breast cancer risk
Recalculating data from the Women's Health Initiative diet modification trial, Dayal and Kalia argue average adherence would avoid 7.3 percent of invasive breast cancers in post-menopausal women, and that the trial showed a dose-response relationship the original reporting obscured.

Mediterranean diet helps infertility in women
Among 161 couples in Dutch fertility treatment, women whose diets most resembled the Mediterranean pattern were 40 percent more likely to conceive than those whose diets were least similar. The study was observational, so it cannot show the diet caused the difference.

How to reduce the risk of heart attack that kills Peter Graves
Peter Graves died at 84 of what his doctor said was likely a heart attack, collapsing outside his Los Angeles home. Most heart attacks follow plaque buildup in the coronary arteries, and nutritionist Colin Campbell is cited for the view that diet drives that buildup and can reverse it.
Diet
Not all types of fat have the same effect on prostate cancer risk
Feeding 80 xenografted mice either a 40-percent-fat western diet or a low-fat diet, Lloyd and colleagues found no difference in weight, survival, PSA or IGF measures. They argue in the Journal of Urology that the type of fat matters more than the amount.

F Factor Diet
Tanya Zuckerbrot's F-Factor diet puts fiber in every meal, on the theory that it fills you up so you eat less through the day. The book sets out a three-stage program and more than 75 recipes. The writer is sceptical that it amounts to more than the advice to eat more fiber.

Gluten and Casein-Free Diet May Help Those with Autism
A case report from Chang Gung University describes a boy with CHARGE syndrome who improved on a gluten- and casein-free diet: more eye contact and speech at 2.5 months, shared play at 5.5 months. The authors note no consensus supports dietary intervention.
