Dr. Mercola argues against the widespread use of statins, citing what he says are 900 studies of adverse effects spanning muscle damage, nerve problems, memory loss, cataracts and liver trouble, and lists the statin products then sold in the US with their manufacturers.

Statins may cut cancer risk
A study in Preventing Chronic Disease of 202,648 Israeli adults found those who used statins persistently were 31 percent less likely to be diagnosed with hematopoietic malignancies. The article stresses this was not a trial and that persistent users may also live more healthily.

Prostate cancer death risk won't be cut by radical prostatectomy
Among 731 men with localized prostate cancer followed 10 years, 47.0% of those given radical prostatectomy died versus 49.9% under observation - a 2.9% absolute difference the authors call non-significant. Adverse effects struck 21.4% within 30 days of surgery and one man died.

Prostate cancer death risk won't be cut by radical prostatectomy
Among 731 men with localized prostate cancer followed for a decade, 47.0 percent of those who had radical prostatectomy died against 49.9 percent assigned to observation, a difference the researchers call insignificant. Adverse effects hit 21.4 percent within 30 days of surgery.

Statins boost type 2 diabetes risk
A British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology study of Irish pharmacy claims covering 239,628 new statin users found 18 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes, rising to 41 percent with rosuvastatin, 23 percent with atorvastatin and 15 percent with simvastatin.

PSA test does not cut prostate cancer death risk
In the PLCO trial of 76,685 men aged 55 to 74, annual PSA testing and rectal exams found more prostate cancers over 13 years but did not reduce deaths: 3.7 versus 3.4 deaths per 10,000 person-years, a difference the researchers say was not statistically significant.

PSA test does not reduce death risk from prostate cancer
Washington University School of Medicine researchers report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute that PSA testing diagnosed more prostate cancer but did not cut the risk of dying from it. A fuller report is promised.

European Commission Report Recommends Phasing Out Dental Amalgam
A European Commission report by the BIO Intelligence Service recommends phasing out dental amalgam and mercury button cell batteries, raising hopes Europe could end dental mercury by 2018. Amalgam is 49 to 54 percent mercury; Sweden has already phased it out. The recommendations are not yet adopted.

Food And Water, Nope. Vaccines, Yep.
Mercola faults Bill Gates for pledging $10 billion for childhood vaccination while, he argues, neglecting the food, clean water and sanitation that prevent infectious disease. He cites an American family's account of a Ugandan village left starving though vaccinated against measles and polio.

Mammograms Have 'Limited or No Effect' on Breast Cancer Deaths: Study
A Journal of the National Cancer Institute study found mammography had limited or no effect on breast cancer deaths among Swedish women aged 40 to 69, where mortality has fallen since 1972, before screening began. Foodconsumer adds that screening also overdiagnoses tumours.
Drug
Breast Cancer Screening Does More Harm Than Good -1
A pitch for a paid three-page report arguing that mammography does not lower breast cancer deaths, that screening overdiagnoses tumors needing no treatment, and that higher survival rates may reflect earlier diagnosis alone. The report costs $1.99 by email.

Breaking Cancer News: DCA - Cancer Cure Discovered - But YOU can't have it....
DCA kills cancer cells in the lab and in people, and a small first trial in glioblastoma patients was encouraging, Mercola writes, but whether it shrinks tumors without other harm is unsettled. Cheap and unpatentable, it attracts little drug-industry funding.

Ziv-Aflibercept
FDA approved ziv-aflibercept (Zaltrap) with FOLFIRI for metastatic colorectal cancer resistant to or progressing after an oxaliplatin-containing regimen. Approval rests on a double-blind trial of 1,226 patients randomized to FOLFIRI plus the drug or placebo, with overall survival the main endpoint.

BRAIN SIGNAL ID'S RESPONDERS TO FAST-ACTING ANTIDEPRESSANT
NIMH researchers report in Biological Psychiatry that a brain signal detectable by non-invasive imaging may identify which depressed patients respond to ketamine, an experimental rapid-acting antidepressant, and may point to the molecular targets behind its effect.

Prescription Painkiller Overdoses
Prescription painkillers killed more than 15,500 people in 2009, and CDC says methadone drove much of the rise: it figured in more than 30 percent of those deaths while accounting for just 2 percent of painkiller prescriptions, six times the methadone overdoses of a decade earlier.

The Hidden Cause of Rotten Health Almost No One Considers (Not Food or Exercise)
Mercola examines conflicts of interest in health agencies, centering on Julie Gerberding, who left the CDC directorship in January 2010 and became president of Merck's vaccine unit. He notes Merck makes 14 of the 17 pediatric vaccines the CDC recommends.

Breast cancer treatment ups leukemia risk in survivors
A review of earlier research reports that breast cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiation all raise the risk of acute myeloid leukemia, with adjuvant chemotherapy and follow-up radiotherapy standing out. The authors say 1 in 20 patients develops a second, non-breast cancer within 10 years.
Drug
Zoledronic acid may not always help breast cancer patients
A meta-analysis of seven trials found breast cancer patients given adjuvant zoledronic acid were 15 percent more likely to survive longer, with fewer recurrences and fractures in early-stage disease but more recurrences in advanced disease, plus bone pain, neutropenic fever, pyrexia and rash.
