Cancer is man-made
A University of Manchester study in Nature Reviews Cancer reports that only one of hundreds of Egyptian mummies showed cancer and ancient writings rarely mention it, which the authors read as evidence that cancer is largely man-made rather than genetic.

Which cell phone is safer: GSM-based or CDMA-based?
A study report suggests GSM phones, used on AT&T and T-Mobile networks, affect brain activity much more than the CDMA phones used by Verizon, Sprint and U.S. Cellular, raising the question of whether buyers should weigh network type when choosing a handset.

Breaking News: U.S. study links cell phone radiation to brain cancer
In a US government animal study, rats exposed to GSM or CDMA cell phone radiation from before birth developed glioma in up to 3.3% of exposed males and heart schwannomas in up to 6.6%, while no control rats developed either. Female rats appeared less susceptible.

Action Alert: "NO CONSENT" to Release of GM Mosquitoes
An Institute for Responsible Technology newsletter urging readers to comment to the FDA against releasing genetically modified mosquitoes before the April 12 deadline, and noting that Randal J. Kirk owns Oxitec, the GM apple company, and a majority stake in AquaBounty.

Electromagnetic fields from Wi-Fi routers affect liver enzymes
A rat study released in November 2015 reported that exposure to 2.45 GHz Wi-Fi router radiation altered liver enzyme activity and shifted blood glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol and HDL. Vitamin C at 250 mg per kg a day appeared to reduce the harm.

Cell Phone radiation can induce DNA strand breaks
A 2005 study exposed human fibroblasts and rodent granulosa cells to the radiofrequency fields used by mobile phones and found detectable DNA single- and double-strand breaks after 16 hours or more, with intermittent exposure producing a stronger effect than continuous exposure.
Agriculture
Cattle prices weakening as result of slower fed cattle marketings
A Texas A&M AgriLife economist told a Franklin beef program that feedlots are holding cattle 180 days or more instead of the usual 120 to avoid losses on expensive feeders. Slaughter weights and beef tonnage are climbing, and producers should brace for lower near-term prices.

Antibacterial soaps no better than ordinary soaps
Korea University researchers found antibacterial soap killed no more bacteria than plain soap and water for any of 20 tested bacterial types, even after the 20 seconds of washing WHO recommends. Overuse of antibacterial soaps could raise drug resistance, a cited report says.

10-year-old Suffers Traumatic Brain Injury After Home is Fumigated
Beyond Pesticides reports a family fell ill after returning home following a Terminix subcontractor's fumigation. A 10-year-old boy has likely brain damage and has lost muscle control, and remains hospitalized in Miami. The piece recounts how EPA's sulfuryl fluoride phase-out was cancelled.

Cow Country Congress set for Oct. 23 at Maysel Ranch in Fairfield
Beef producers meeting at Maysel Ranch near Fairfield on Oct. 23 will hear Texas A&M AgriLife Extension speakers on preparing cattle for the feedlot, feral hog trapping with the BoarBuster, proper hay storage, and advocating for agriculture.

Study examines decline of Texas livestock auction markets
Texas had 167 livestock auction markets in 1969 and only 92 by 2013, a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension study found, with drought-driven herd losses behind the consolidation. Beef cow numbers peaked near 7 million head in the mid-1970s and now run about 4.2 million.

Key performance indicators can lead to cattle profits
Texas A&M AgriLife economist Stan Bevers laid out 13 key performance indicators for ranchers at the Beef Cattle Short Course, from pounds weaned per exposed female and revenue per breeding female to net income ratio and return on assets. He built them from standardized ranch data.

EWG's Cancer Prevention Initiative
A fundraising appeal from the Environmental Working Group seeking $100,000 by August 14, with a donor match, to launch a Cancer Prevention Initiative built around Halifax Project research suggesting that mixtures of individually non-carcinogenic chemicals may cause cancer.

Following up re: asbestos 071315 newsletter from EWG
EWG Action Fund says tests it commissioned at a government-certified lab found asbestos in four brands of crayons and two children's fingerprint kits, and that asbestos-related disease kills up to 15,000 Americans a year. It asks readers to sign a petition and back the READ Act.

Vitamin D deficiency may be a major risk for melanoma
A Dermato-Endocrinology report argues that avoiding sun lowers vitamin D and that the resulting deficiency may raise melanoma risk, noting the disease rose among fair-skinned indoor workers while outdoor workers had lower rates. The authors still advise avoiding sunburn.

Food & Water Watch and Water Defense Call For Halt to Irrigating Food Crops with Oil Field Wastewater in Nation’s Produce Basket
Food & Water Watch and Water Defense called on Governor Jerry Brown to end the irrigation of Central Valley crops with treated oil field wastewater, after Water Defense sampling of water sold to the Cawelo Water District turned up tar balls, oil slicks and toxic industrial chemicals.

Urgent action needed re: asbestos
EWG Action Fund asks readers to contact Congress against Rep. Blake Farenthold's Furthering Asbestos Claims Transparency Act, which it says would delay and reduce compensation for asbestos victims and force them to disclose detailed personal information.
