EWG asks readers to press their senators to reject a new chemical safety bill the group says falls far short of real reform. EWG research detected 287 chemicals in newborns' umbilical cord blood, 180 of them known to cause cancer in humans or animals.

Amphibians disappearing at alarming rate
An AP report says frogs, salamanders and toads are vanishing from the sites they inhabit at about 3.7 percent a year, which would halve their numbers in 20 years. Some species are disappearing faster than 11 percent a year, halving in roughly six.

Agent orange a risk factor for prostate cancer
Among 2,720 veterans who underwent prostate biopsy, those exposed to Agent Orange were 52 percent more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer overall, 75 percent more likely at a Gleason score of 7 or above, and 110 percent more likely at 8 or above.

Discover the Environmental Impacts of Unsustainable Farming
Clearing and plowing farmland strips topsoil — WWF estimates Brazil loses 55 million tons a year to soy production — while chemical and pesticide runoff pollutes streams, rivers and oceans. WWF also reports about half the earth's habitable land has already become farmland.

Chinese Organic Food Scrutinized at Congressional Hearing (PR)
At a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee hearing, Cornucopia Institute analyst Mark Kastel said the USDA and FDA inspect only 1 to 2 percent of imported food and that a disproportionate number of serious problems turn up in Chinese exports, including nine of 22 fraudulent organic certificates.

U.S. public overwhelmingly rejects genetically engineered trees
Global Justice Ecology Project reports that almost 99.99% of comments to USDA APHIS opposed ArborGen's petition to sell genetically engineered freeze-tolerant eucalyptus, with campaigners calling the trees invasive and flammable.

GE Trees May Be Even More Damaging to the Environment than GE Foods
Mercola summarizes the documentary A Silent Forest, which argues genetically engineered trees pose a larger ecological risk than GE crops: trees live for decades, spread pollen and seed for hundreds of miles, and would be near impossible to eradicate once they escape a plantation.

Air pollution bad for type 2 diabetes patients
A Diabetes Care study of 1,392 people with type 2 diabetes in Pune, India linked ambient air pollution to serum C-reactive protein. The researchers conclude pollution can contribute to systemic inflammation, with possible implications for vascular complications.

Artichokes finding a place in the ‘heart’ of Texas (PR)
MO Produce LLC harvested 12 acres of artichokes near Brownsville in its fifth year growing the crop in the Rio Grande Valley, with advice from Texas A&M's Uvalde center. California still accounts for more than 95 percent of US production, and Texas plantings remain small.

Today’s Smorgasbord of Ag Chemicals Poses Special Risks to Children’s Health
New research found women with the highest exposure to DDT in the womb were 2.5 to 3.6 times more likely to develop high blood pressure before age 50 than those with the lowest. Mercola pairs it with EWG testing that averaged 200 toxins in newborn blood samples.
Environment
BPA boosts risk of childhood asthma
A Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology study found inner-city children with the highest BPA levels at ages 3, 5 and 7 were 40 percent more likely to have asthma than those with the lowest. The piece lists ways to cut exposure, such as avoiding plastics coded 3 or 7.

Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster: What can you do to protect yourself?
A WHO-commissioned report expects no rise in cancer rates for the general population, but higher estimated risks in the most contaminated parts of Fukushima Prefecture: around 4 percent more solid cancers and up to 70 percent more thyroid cancer among females exposed as infants.

Using mobile phones lowers odds of survival from brain cancer - study
Hardell and Carlberg report in Neuroepidemiology that glioblastoma patients in the highest tertile of cumulative mobile phone use were 20 percent less likely to survive than those in the lowest. The case-control analysis followed 1,251 brain cancer patients diagnosed between 1997 and 2003.

Bye-Bye to the Airport TSA Backscatter Machines
Rapiscan's x-ray backscatter scanners are leaving U.S. airports, but privacy complaints and a missed software deadline drove the removal, not radiation concerns. Most are being replaced with millimeter wave units, and similar machines from another maker may take their place.
Environment
hormone disruptors and carcinogens
An Environmental Working Group appeal asking readers to sign a petition for cosmetics reform, arguing companies can use almost any ingredient without proving it safe and that EWG research has found hormone disruptors and carcinogens in everyday shampoos and moisturizers.
Environment
Counting the cost of mercury pollution - PR
Using hair samples from 17 countries in the DEMOCOPHES study, researchers estimate at least 1,866,000 children are born in Europe each year with methylmercury exposure above the safe limit and 232,000 at hazardous levels. Cutting that exposure could save the EU about 10,000 million euros a year.
Environment
Pesticides cause Parkinson's disease - PR
UCLA researchers add benomyl, banned about a decade ago, to the pesticides they have tied to Parkinson's disease. They report it blocks the enzyme ALDH, letting the brain toxin DOPAL build up and damage neurons, a cascade they believe may occur in patients never exposed to it.

Dental x-ray linked to thyroid cancer
A case-control study in Acta Oncologica found people exposed to high doses of dental x-rays had double the thyroid cancer risk of those with low exposure. The piece opens with Brooke Burke's thyroid cancer surgery and notes head and neck radiation is a known risk factor.
